THIS WEEKEND
After a nice little break for Thanksgiving, the Dartmouth women's basketball team is back on Saturday with its third of four straight road games, this time against Merrimack.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green suffered a 77-49 loss to Holy Cross at the Hart Center at Luth Athletic Complex the Tuesday before last.
·
Grace Niekelski had a career-best 16 point-performance, going 7-for-10 in field goals (.700), 1-for-3 in 3-pointers (.333) and 1-for-2 in free throws (.500).
· Finishing with eight points was
Carrington Washburn after going 2-for-5 in field goals (.400), 2-for-4 in threes (.500) and a perfect 2-for-2 in charity shots.
· The first quarter started close, but the Crusaders started to pull away and took a 24-15 lead into the second.
· Five straight for the home team started the second, broken up by a
Emma Koch free throws. Back-to-back jumpers by
Jimena Abejon and Niekelski got the Green four points closer, while
Mia Curtis' first 3-pointer of the game ended the half (43-27).
· Dartmouth picked up the first two points of the third thanks to
Rosie Jennings. The Big Green held Holy Cross in place for four minutes while Abejon,
Isabella DiGiovanni and Jennings added to Dartmouth's total, but the home team responded with a 6-0 run in the final seconds (59-36).
· Two good free throws and a jumper by
Mekkena Boyd and a trifecta and three foul shots from Washburn had the Green with a 9-5 advantage. The next nine points went the other way, stopped by a swisher from Niekelski. Scoring was low in the final minutes, ending with a Holy Cross jumper.
SCOUTING MERRIMACK
The Warriors are off to a 1-3 start in 2021-22, falling to Vermont (87-57) and Rhode Island (106-42) before picking up their first win of the year against Albany (65-52). Last Sunday, they had an 85-64 loss to Lehigh on the road.
LAST TIME VS. THE WARRIORS
Dartmouth and Merrimack met for the first (and only time) on Nov. 13, 2019, facing each other right after the Warriors were elevated to Division I. The Big Green won that game, 57-52.
Three members of the team were in double figures, led by Annie McKenna '20, who finished with 14 points, five assists and four rebounds.
Anna Luce '21 came away with 12 points from four rebounds, while Paula Lenart '20 had 10 points and eight boards.
Elle Louie '21 was everywhere, recording nine points, 11 rebounds, six assists and four blocked shots.
Dartmouth led by 20 points with 4:55 left in regulation before Merrimack went on a 20-2 run to cut the lead to 54-52 with 1:07 to go. The Green would hang on, winning by five to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
AROUND THE LEAGUE
Nobody is undefeated anymore just over two weeks into the season: Columbia saw its five-game winning streak come to an end against Stony Brook (91-82), Rhode Island did in Princeton (61-53) and Villanova beat Penn (66-63).
