NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Dartmouth women's basketball had a second-half comeback that fell short, being edged by Merrimack, 73-65, at Hammel Court on Saturday.
Katie Douglas led with 16 points, just shy of her career-best 20 from her freshman year. She went 5-for-7 (.714) in field goals, 4-for-6 (.667) in 3-pointers and a perfect 2-for-2 in free throws. Also ending with double-digit points were
Mekkena Boyd (14),
Victoria Page (11) and
Carrington Washburn (10), all of which were season-bests.
Dartmouth (0-4) vs. Merrimack (2-3)
After Merrimack took an early lead, Dartmouth briefly moved ahead thanks to two free throws by Douglas and jumpers by Rosie Jennings and Boyd (6-3). The Big Green were kept there while the Warriors went on an 11-point streak, ended five minutes later by back-to-back shots by Page (10-14). Merrimack got ahead by six, but that edge was cut in half by Washburn with 44 seconds to go (13-16).
Dartmouth shined in the second quarter and outscored Merrimack, 23-17. The visitors made it 16-all 21 seconds in with a trey by Boyd and tied it two more ties before taking the lead at the halfway point. Starting with a 3-pointer from Douglas, the Green went on a 7-0 run over a three-minute span to pull ahead by five (30-25). The teams traded points until it was 33-33 with 1:13 to play, but a well-timed 3-pointer from Douglas with eight seconds remaining put Dartmouth up to end the half (36-33).
Four lead changes and two ties encompassed the first three and a half minutes of the third. Tied at 40-40 thanks to a Boyd jumper, the sophomore transfer got the Green one ahead thanks to a charity shot before
Doreen Ariik made it a three-point game (43-40). After the Warriors evened the score, it took almost two minutes before they stole the lead (43-46) with 4:08 to go. Having been held scoreless for three minutes, a 7-0 Dartmouth run was started by a Washburn shot and ended two minutes later (50-48). The Big Green went 6-for-9 in free throws in the third and had a 52-48 advantage with 1:13 to play, but a Merrimack 3-pointer with one tick remaining had the home team trailing by just one (52-51).
Having been down since the midway point of the third, the home team moved ahead at 5:45, but that lasted all of 13 seconds before Washburn's trifecta gave the lead back to Dartmouth (60-58). A Merrimack shot from the line at 4:27 tied things up, while four good charity shots shifted the score (60-64) with 2:11 to go. A Douglas three made it a one-point game, while one for the other team put them up by four with (63-67). Page got Dartmouth closer, but too many Green fouls paired with a good free throw percentage for Merrimack ended the game (65-73).
There is one tilt left on the four road-game schedule that has lasted for the entirety of November. The Big Green will face the Dragons of Drexel (great mascot choice) on Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.
