ITHACA, N.Y. – Three players had double-doubles in Dartmouth volleyball's 3-1 defeat of Cornell (25-18, 25-20, 27-29, 25-20) on Friday evening.
Â
Karen Murphy (18D, 21A),
Taite Ryan (24D, 13K) and
Makenzie Arent (21A, 18D) led the way. This is the first time Dartmouth has beaten Cornell on the road since a 3-1 win on Oct. 16, 2015. The team's 102 digs is a season-high record.
Â
"I thought we played our toughest road match of the year tonight," head coach
Gilad Doron said. "102 digs in four games is remarkable. Our blocking was solid and we got timely kills from different players. Our setters both made great choices and their location was on point tonight. This is a great team win, a very physical game, and I hope we can get some rest before tomorrow's match at Columbia and match the same intensity we had tonight."
Â
Dartmouth (13-7, 5-6) vs. Cornell (6-13, 2-9)
Dartmouth stormed out in the first set and, after too many Cornell errors and some kills by
Ellie Blain, had a 7-2 edge. The Big Red started to catch up and got within one, but four straight points put some distance between them (12-7). The Big Green kept up the momentum and two kills by
Amelia Gibbs gave them a good lead, but the home team wasn't bowing out yet (19-16). A 5-2 rally made up of kills by Blain and Ryan handed the first set to Dartmouth (25-18).
Â
It was Cornell that had the early edge in the second, sporting a 9-4 advantage. Dartmouth turned that around and a good run following kills by
Bomi Ogunlari,
Emma Moffet and Ryan made it a one-point set (10-11). The Big Green took the lead for a second after kills by Ryan and an ace by Murphy, but the Big Red swooped back in front (14-16). A 5-2 rally composed of kills by Blain, Ogunlari and Ryan and an ace by
Bella Hedley put Dartmouth ahead once again (19-18). A 6-2 run capped by kills by Gibbs and Murphy gave the Green another win (25-20).
Â
The start of the third was close until a 5-0 Cornell rally put the home team ahead (5-9). The Big Green kept sneaking up until a 4-0 rally gave them the lead (15-14). That's where the tying began. The Big Red got to set point, but three straight points from a kill by Gibbs and two
Emma Engstrom aces brought Dartmouth even with Cornell (24-24). The teams traded points, tying three times before the Big Red ended it (27-29).
Â
The beginning of the fourth was close until the Green fired off five straight from a kill by Blain, an ace by Engstrom and three Cornell errors (8-2). An 8-3 run on the other side of the net suddenly made it more of a game (11-10). After the Big Red tied the score at 12, Dartmouth would pull ahead only to have Cornell even the score right after. Locked at 16-all, kills by Blain and Ogunlari and a Big Red error put a little space between the teams (19-16). They went back and forth, keeping it within two points, until a Cornell error and one final kill by Blain wrapped up the match (25-22).
Â
The Big Green will be back in action on Saturday against Columbia. Â
