HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's ice hockey team was defeated by #15 Cornell, 5-4, in ECAC Hockey action on Saturday evening at Thompson Arena.
Â
The Big Green fall to 1-3 overall with a 1-2 conference record.
Â
What started out as a low scoring game with three goals through two periods, both teams each scored three goals in the final frame.
Â
Senior
Jeff Losurdo had a great game for the Big Green, scoring two goals while helping on another.
Â
The Big Red opened the scoring late in the first period. After forcing a turnover, Cornell came right down the ice and Jack Malone was able to sneak one around sophomore goaltender
Clay Stevenson.
Â
Dartmouth tied the game up midway through the second period after taking advantage of a power play opportunity. Sophomore
Joey Musa's initial shot was saved but the puck stayed in front of goal. Losurdo and several other players dove towards the puck to get it over the line, and Losurdo got his stick on it for his first goal of the season.
Â
Cornell took the lead back in the final five minutes of the second period when Ben Berard found himself with space in front of goal and fired it into the right side of the net.
Â
Just 30 seconds into the final frame, Dartmouth equalized again after junior
Mark Gallant grabbed his first goal of the season. Junior
Tanner Palocsik's shot was saved but the rebound fell perfectly for Gallant, who struck it first time into the back of the net.
Â
The Big Red scored two more goals, at the 11:17 mark and the 7:36 mark to take a 4-2 lead. Looking to make a comeback, Dartmouth pulled their goaltender to get an extra attacker on the ice. After forcing a turnover, freshman
Matt Hubbarde picked up the loose puck, brought it down the right side, and fired it towards the near post and snuck it past the Cornell goaltender for his first career goal and to cut the deficit to one.
Â
Cornell had a great chance to finish it off. Berard had a chance to score the empty net goal but elected to lay it off instead, which gave Hubbarde enough time to get back defensively and make the play to keep Dartmouth in the game.
Â
And it paid off, as just 30 seconds later, with 1:23 remaining, Losurdo scored his second goal of the night to tie the game at 4-4. Gallant made a great pass across the front of goal and Losurdo smashed it in.
Â
Berard made up for his error though, as he scored the winning goal for the Big Red with just over six seconds remaining in the third period.
Â
Dartmouth will look to rebound next weekend as they hit the road for first time in the 2021-22 season, taking on St. Lawrence on Friday evening followed by Saturday night tilt with Clarkson.
