HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's basketball returned home for the first time in a month, falling to Loyola Chicago, 73-37, at Leede Arena on Friday evening.
Three players led the way with seven points apiece:
Grace Niekelski,
Carrington Washburn and
Mia Curtis.
Dartmouth (0-6) vs. Loyola Chicago (5-2)
Back-to-back buckets by Washburn in the first minute paired with a handful of missed shots by the Ramblers put Dartmouth up, 4-0. A 5-0 run on the other side was ended by Washburn's 3-pointer at 6:54 to give the Green a 7-5 edge. Loyola kept Dartmouth off the board for the next minute while it pulled away, but two good foul shots by
Victoria Page got the Big Green back in the game with under 5:00 to go (9-11). A 9-2 Rambler run ended the quarter, capped by a free throw by
Jimena Abejon with two ticks remaining (12-20).
The Ramblers scored six of the first eight points in the opening two minutes second quarter but play became more even after that. Dartmouth had a 9-8 streak over the course of three minutes thanks to
Rosie Jennings, Page and a Niekelski trey (21-32). After that strong run, the Green were kept scoreless for the last 4:57 while Loyola went on a nine-point run (21-41).
A Curtis layup eight seconds in followed by a shot by
Mekkena Boyd less than 40 seconds later was the start Dartmouth needed (25-41). A three and a layup by Curtis within 30 seconds of each other brought the sophomore to seven points in a three-minute span. A swisher from
Isabella DiGiovanni halfway through got the Big Green within 13 after a 12-4 run (32-45). Neither team scored over the next two minutes, but the final 120 seconds went Loyola's way (34-56).
Loyola had a 7-2 advantage over the first three minutes of the fourth, with Dartmouth's points coming from
Doreen Ariik (36-63). A three-minute dry spell was ended by a free throw by Boyd with 5:03 to play. The last half of the final quarter was won by Loyola with its 10-1 run (37-73).
Dartmouth will be back at Leede on Sunday when it hosts Monmouth at 1 p.m.
