HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's basketball led for most of the game but couldn't hold on in the fourth quarter, falling to Monmouth at Leede Arena on Sunday, 55-37.
Katie Douglas led with nine points, going 4-for-9 in field goals (.444) and 1-for-3 in 3-pointers (.333).
Carrington Washburn was right behind her with eight points from 2-for-9 in FG (.222), 2-for-7 (.286) in treys and a perfect 2-for-2 in free throws.
Doreen Ariik had an impressive 10 rebounds.
Dartmouth (0-7) vs. Monmouth (3-3)
The Hawks got the first two points but were held there while the Big Green went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a nice steal by Washburn and a layup from
Mia Curtis four minutes in (8-2). A Monmouth steal and breakaway looked certain to produce some points, but a huge
Emma Koch block shut that down. In total, Monmouth was kept scoreless for almost six minutes before finding its legs and taking the lead right at the buzzer (12-13).
The score remained the same until a Washburn trey at 7:34, giving the lead back to the home team for all of 15 seconds before a three on the other side put Monmouth up by one (15-16). Washburn's second in a row two minutes later moved Dartmouth ahead again, while Curtis' bucket made it a four-point game. A Hawk jumper with 2:40 to go narrowed the gap, but Dartmouth managed to stay ahead (20-18).
Both teams scored seven points in the first three minutes of the third, thanks to a 3-pointer and a layup by Douglas and foul shots by
Grace Niekelski and Curtis (27-25). Ariik's first field goal of the afternoon gave the Big Green a four-point cushion, and although a Monmouth 3-pointer soon after lessened that to one, Douglas was back with 5:22 to go to increase the lead (31-28). That didn't last though and five straight points for the Hawks put them ahead, 33-31, with 3:01 remaining. Curtis' two free throws tied things up before one more Monmouth trey came about. Another buzzer beater gave the Hawks their biggest lead of the game (33-38).
The fourth was won by the visitors with their 17-4 advantage. Dartmouth's points came from a Koch free throw and an
Allie Harland layup late in the quarter.
Mekkena Boyd added a shot from the charity stripe before the game was done (37-55).
On Wednesday, December 8, Dartmouth will head north up I-89 to take on Vermont. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
