Dartmouthsports.com is recognizing senior student-athletes who had their spring seasons postponed again due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today's Senior … Christopher Cheng of the Big Green sailing team. Christopher comes to Dartmouth from Avon, Conn. Before COVID-19 shut everything down, he helped the team to a second-place finish at the Tufts Invite.Â
DartmouthSports.com: For the average person that doesn't know much about sailing, what do your workouts look like. Do you do a lot of free weights or cardio?
Christopher Cheng: Our workouts are pretty holistic. We train everything in the weight room with special focus on lower body and core. Meanwhile rowing is a staple of our cardio workout regimen.
DS: Looking back over your career what has been your most memorable team moment?
CC: Sailing in Charleston for the first time. Charleston is gorgeous and being on the water all day with the team with the USS Yorktown in the back was unforgettable.
DS: What was your most memorable individual moment?
CC: Sailing in hail at Boston College with wind chill bringing the temperature sub-30.Â
DS: What is the best part of practice?
CC: The grind towards a championship with 25 of your best friends. The sense of unity and shared purpose with the team.
DS: What is the worst?
CC: When there's no wind or when the lake is frozen.
DS: Do you have a hidden talent you would like people to know about?
CC: I learned how to juggle off YouTube.
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
CC: Ryan Goldstein seems like he's got it all figured out.
DS: What are your plans after Dartmouth? Have they changed with the pandemic?
CC: I'm starting medical school in New York City.

What Coach Assad has to say about Christopher:Â
"Chris is a phenomenal athlete, and he used that athleticism to adapt his body to the demands of our sport. Affectionately referred to as "Dr. Cheng" by his teammates because of his aspirations to pursue a career in medicine, it speaks volumes that Chris has achieved that goal and will pursue medical school next year while satisfying the demands of a division one varsity athlete. Chris worked hard to master our game while existing as a reliably lighthearted presence in practice, reminding all of us to smile with his humor and overall outlook on things, and always ready with a logic-oriented comment to help everyone keep things in perspective! We will miss his smile and presence around our practices.
