Dartmouthsports.com is recognizing senior student-athletes who had their spring seasons postponed again due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today's Senior … Kathryn Hall of the Big Green sailing team. Kathryn hails from Haverford, Pennsylvania where she was the second place overall top girl at the 2016 Sailing U.S. Youth Championships. At the Agnes Irwin school she also earned three letters in softball and tennis, captaining both squads as a senior.
DartmouthSports.com: For the average person that doesn't know much about sailing, what do your workouts look like. Do you do a lot of free weights or cardio?
Kathryn Hall:Â We lift twice a week when we are in season (fall & spring) in Floren with Coach Schuyler. We also do cardio, which usually consists of rowing on the erg machine or agility exercises on Friday mornings.
DS: Looking back over your career what has been your most memorable team moment?
KH: When we return to campus after our spring break trip to Charleston, Lake Mascoma is usually still frozen, so we have the wonderful opportunity of traveling to UVM to practice on Lake Champlain. One practice, it was extremely cold, and I remember sailing in the basin at UVM and suddenly, everything was flash freezing on our boat, including my hair! This was a wild, but awesome experience because while we all were definitely in physical pain, we were just stoked to get out and sail and ended up having a really successful day on the water.
DS: What was your most memorable individual moment?
KH: When I sailed and won my first college sailing race during my freshman year when we competed at Boston College.Â
DS: What is the best part of practice?
KH:Â We have to rig our boats for every practice (which involves physically getting the boat out of the garage bays, stepping the mast, attaching all the ropes and sails, and launching the boat in the water) which is actually my favorite part of practice because we all help each other get ready and also put everything away at the end of the day as a team.
DS: Do you have a hidden talent you would like people to know about?
KH:Â This isn't necessarily a talent, but I am 4'11" and probably won't ever reach 5 feet.
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
KH:Â
Maddie Hawkins because I grew up sailing with her and would love to have three years ahead of me on the Dartmouth Sailing Team.
