HANOVER, N.H. — The off-season will have to wait a little longer for three members of the Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team, each of whom will compete at the 2021 World Rowing U23 Championships.
Â
Liam Keane, who will return to Dartmouth this fall and row as a graduated student, was the first to be selected after competing on June 17 in Sarasota, Florida. The native of Victoria, British Columbia, will represent Canada in the Men's Four along with Adam Krol, Jack Walkey and Peter Lancashire.
Â
This will be Keane's second time competing in the race having competed with the 2018 U23 team following two stints as a junior. Keene last rowed with the Dartmouth heavyweight varsity boat that placed third at the IRA Championship.
Â
The Big Green have two members who will compete for the United States as well in rising junior
Jacob Hudgins and rising sophomore
William Bender, who hails from Norwich, Vermont, just across the Connecticut River from the college campus.
Â
The duo will compete in the Men's Eight in a boat that is made up of six Ivy Leaguers, complementing rowers from Northeastern, Stanford and Navy. Bender, like Keene, was a member of the bronze medal boat at the IRA Championship.
Â
Coach
Wyatt Allen on the honor, "We are thrilled that Liam has been selected to represent Canada and Jacob and Billy have been selected to represent the US at the Under 23 World Championships. All three have been steadfast in their goal of racing internationally this summer, and to see their hard work and consistency through the ups and downs of the last 14 months is just awesome.
Â
Having two athletes in the US eight and one in Canada's priority line-up reflects the depth and competitiveness of our current group. I know the entire Dartmouth Rowing family will be tracking the racing and cheering Liam, Jacob and Billy on from afar, and we are looking forward to all three returning to Hanover next fall better for the experience.
Â
The World Rowing U23 Championships will be held in RaÄŤice, Czech Republic, from July 7 to 11.
