CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team enjoyed strong success at the 60th Head of the Charles this weekend, with two crews picking up medals and the Big Green finishing seventh overall (fourth collegiate team) in the championship eights.
The Head of the Charles is a three-mile, 4,800 meter course which features a number of turns. It is completed in a time trial format. Overall Dartmouth rowing (men's heavyweight and men's lightweight and women's) finished second in overall team points for the MacMahon Cup at the weekend's Head of the Charles.
"I was very happy with the effort this weekend," said
Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "Winning the club eights was great; the club four finished second behind a very good Canadian crew of post grads.
"For our varsity to finish fourth collegiately, second Ivy League behind Harvard, that's a very good result for where we are in the fall," Allen continued. "We graduated a lot of key guys, so we asked some young guys to step up and they did a great job of that. This year's going to be a process for us, but this was a really good start."
The weekend began with the club four finishing second out of 43 crews with a time of 16:30.015. Not long after, the club eight captured first out of 36 crews with a time of 14:21.861. The Big Green's B boat also came in 11th (15:01.432).
On Sunday, Dartmouth's 1V and 2V both competed in the championship eights, with the varsity capturing seventh out of 30 crews overall with a time of 13:55.613 and the 2V taking 24th (14:21.248). The varsity was in the mix, finishing just 14 seconds behind first-place Cambridge, a small margin for a three-mile race.
The Cambridge crew that took gold featured Big Green alum
Sammy Houdaigui '25 and Felix Rawlinson '24 while the US Training Crew that finished in sixth, less than four seconds ahead of the Big Green varsity, featured alums Billy Bender '25 and Jacob Hudgins '24, fresh off a bronze finish at the World Rowing Championships.
The weekend wrapped up the fall competition for the Big Green, who look to build off last year's success, featuring the varsity eight capturing third overall at the IRA National Championship.
"I really like this year's group," said Allen. "There's a lot of talent and potential there and the guys came back in really good shape. We're off to a great start, but we have a lot of hard work ahead of us."
