HANOVER, N.H. - Men's heavyweight rowing head coach Wyatt Allen has announced the addition of John Lindberg to the coaching staff.Â
Lindberg arrives at Dartmouth from Harvard-Radcliffe rowing, where he was named interim head coach of Radcliffe Lightweight Crew in his second season with the program, after beginning as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. During his time on the Harvard-Radcliffe staff, the program earned a silver medal in the varsity eight and a bronze medal in the varsity four at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, and the coaching staff was honored as the College Rowing Coaches Association's Staff of the Year in 2025.
"We are incredibly fortunate to be adding John to our coaching staff," Allen said. "His extensive experience and expertise are going to benefit both our student-athletes and our staff. Competing against John's crews over the years, I've had a front row seat to observe just how good of a coach he is. I have no doubt he is going to have a profound impact on our group on and off the water."
Lindberg brings decades of coaching and administrative experience in rowing and secondary education. Prior to Harvard-Radcliffe, he served as director of rowing for the Union Boat Club in Boston, overseeing coaching, safety practices, and programming for more than 200 club members ranging from adult learners to former Olympians. Before that, Lindberg spent 10 years as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for Boston University men's rowing, where his crews consistently advanced to national championship finals.
During Lindberg's tenure at Boston University, the program reached the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship semifinals in all four boats for five consecutive years, highlighted by the 2017-18 season, when the third varsity eight and varsity four advanced to the grand finals and the team placed eighth nationally in Ten Eyck points. The 2016-17 squad finished sixth at the national championship regatta and, that same season, defeated Brown University to win the Michalson Cup, completing a sweep of all six annual cup races for the first time in program history. The Terriers also defeated Northeastern University by open water to capture the Arlett Cup for a third consecutive year.
Earlier in his Boston University tenure, Lindberg helped guide the program to its first national championship medal in eights rowing, a bronze in the second varsity eight in 2015, followed by a silver-medal finish at Eastern Sprints that same year. The second varsity eight earned bronze at Eastern Sprints again in 2016. Between 2010 and 2014, the program built steadily toward that success, with the freshman boat going undefeated in dual racing in 2010, the varsity earning top-six national finishes in 2011 and 2012, and the team receiving the 2014 Chapman Award for most improved program after a 51-point jump in national championship scoring.
Before joining Boston University, Lindberg coached at Northeastern University, leading recruiting efforts and the freshman squad to multiple medal-winning seasons. He has also coached for the U.S. National Team, including at the Under-23 World Championships, and currently coaches for the Boston Training Center, which supports Boston-based national team members and hopefuls.
Lindberg's own rowing career began at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, where he won the Princess Elizabeth Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta. He went on to row at Brown University under longtime coach Steve Gladstone before representing the United States in the double sculls at the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba.
"I could not be more pleased to be joining such a terrific boathouse. The Friends of Dartmouth Rowing Boathouse is a purposeful, joyful, and welcoming place, and I've had the privilege of working with Dartmouth student-athletes in prior roles, admiring the passion they bring to their sport. I've enjoyed watching all three programs thrive under the leadership of Wyatt Allen, John Graves, and Trevor Michelson, and I'm honored to be part of the team."
