Heavyweight Rowing Sweeps Varsity 8 Races Against Syracuse, Wisconsin, Boston University

FAIRLEE, Vt. - This past weekend, the Dartmouth heavyweight rowing team hosted the Lake Morey Invite, welcoming Syracuse, Wisconsin, Boston University, Columbia, Georgetown to the Upper Valley. The Big Green competed against Syracuse, Wisconsin, and Boston University, winning the Varsity 8 in all three regattas.

The Big Green and Terriers were the only teams with a 5V boat, so they kicked off the racing on Saturday. Dartmouth cruised to the 9.1 second victory, finishing in 6:08.3.

Dartmouth then took on the Orange for the Packard Cup.

In the first race, the 4V race, Dartmouth earned the win by four tenths of a second, crossing the finish line in 5:55.1. They also took the win in the 3V race, posting a time of 5:45.9.

The Orange got their lone win of Session 1 in the 2V race, defeating the Big Green by 2.2 seconds. Syracuse crossed in 5:42.9 while the Big Green earned a time of 5:45.1.

Dartmouth responded to earn its first Varsity 8 win of the day in the final race of the session, earning the win with a time of 5:40.7.

Later in the afternoon, the Big Green raced against Wisconsin in Session 2. Before taking on the Badgers, Dartmouth raced in the 4V against the Columbia Lions. The Big Green took the victory finishing 17 seconds faster than the Lions with a time of 5:59.

In the 3V race against Wisconsin, Dartmouth once again came out on top finishing in 5:57.8. They also claimed the win in the 2V (5:53.3) and the Varsity 8.

The Varsity 8 finish was the closest of the races against the Badgers, as the Big Green came away with the 2.7 second victory, finishing with a time of 5:52.8.

Session 2 wrapped with a Varsity Four race, as the Big Green took on a floating start against the Boston University Terriers. Dartmouth had two boats in the race, claiming the top two spots with times of 6:44.1 and 6:49.6 respectively.

The Lake Morey Invite concluded on Sunday, April 26, as the Big Green raced in one final session, this time taking on the Terriers. In the 5V race, Dartmouth posted a dominant 15.5 second win over BU.

They followed with a win in the 4V race. Joined by Columbia, the Big Green finished in 6:00.6, followed by the Terriers (6:07.4) and the Lions (6:19.6).

Dartmouth then went on to win the 3V race, finishing in 5:55.5, the 2V race with a time of 5:52.5, and the Varsity 8 race, earning its third win of the weekend to take home the Bill Cup. The Big Green earned the win in the premier race with a time of 5:42.6, finishing just five tenths of a second ahead of the Terriers.

The Big Green will be back in action this weekend, taking on the Yale Bulldogs at Lake Morey on Saturday, May 2. The regatta is set to begin at 2 p.m.
