PRINCETON, N.J. — The Dartmouth women's golf team was one of six squads to break 300 in the final round, carding an 8-over 296 to climb three places in the final standings at the Princeton Invitational into ninth with a final score of 311-299-296—906 (+42). Junior
Samantha Yao jumped 12 spots on the individual leaderboard today to end up in a tie for 15th in the 70-player field to lead the Big Green.
Yao continued her solid play today with two birdies and 12 pars, concluding her round on the 6,134-yard, par-72 course at Springdale Golf Club at 2-over par (74). That brought her total score to 223 (+7) as she recorded a team-best 35 pars over the three rounds.
But the best Dartmouth round of the day belonged to sophomore
Penelope Tir who dropped six birdies in her even-par 72 round. She improved in each successive round to card a 79-74-72—223 (+9), tying for 23rd.
Sophomore
Katherine Sung was just one stroke behind Tir today to finish one stroke ahead of her overall in a tie for 18th. Despite starting her round with a bogey on the par-4 16th hole, Sung immediately recovered by sinking a birdie on 17 then recorded par on eleven holes while adding two more birdies to earn a spot in the top 20 in a tie for 18th, closing out with an 8-over 224.
The other score contributing to the final Big Green total came from freshman
Claire Xu, who posted a couple of birdies to match her second-round score of 77 (+5). She concluded the tournament with an 18-over 234, tying for 58th. Freshman
Mari Caldwell rounded out the Dartmouth squad, improving three strokes from her identical first two rounds.
Albany's Amber Thornton beat out Princeton's Tiffany Kong by two strokes for medalist honors, making up two strokes along the way to finish up with a 6-under 210. The Tigers did have four of the top seven, however, utilizing the home advantage to win their own tournament at even par. But Princeton could only match the Dartmouth total in the final round today with a 296 (+8). Columbia claimed second, 15 strokes of the pace with an 879, and Seton Hall was three strokes behind the Lions in third.
The Big Green will next play at Yale in two weeks for a tournament on Oct. 9-10 on the Yale Golf Course.
