CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine — With yesterday's events postponed and the Nordic races rescheduled for later in the winter, the Colby Carnival was concluded today with the slalom. Both the Dartmouth men and women finished third in their respective races, and with the doubling of Friday's freestyle race scoring, the Big Green took second overall with 811 points, exactly 100 behind Vermont.
In the men's race, freshman
Oliver Morgan ripped off Dartmouth's fastest run on the first run down Sugarloaf in 55.49 seconds, followed closely by fifth-year senior
Kalle Wagner in 55.59. But on the second run, it was junior
Hunter Brayton that posted the Big Green's best time (51.32), though he came up just short of Wagner's combined 1:47.44. Wagner took sixth overall and Brayton eighth (1:47.59) while Morgan maintained his place in the top 10 by finishing 10th in 1:47.83.
Vermont and New Hampshire posted the five best times, with the latter edging out the Catamounts in team points, 127-118, while Dartmouth collected an even 100. Friday's giant slalom champion, Joachim Lindstoel of Vermont, repeated today by a wide margin, nearly two seconds ahead of UNH's William Bruneau-Bouchard.
The Big Green women had a nice cluster of skiers in the top eight at the conclusion of the first run, led by junior
Gwen Wattenmaker in sixth (53.97 seconds), followed closely by fifth-year senior
Hannah Utter in seventh (54.03) and sophomore
Olivia Holm in eighth (54.38). Wattenmaker moved up a slot after her second attempt, which was the third fastest, claiming fifth with a combined time of 1:47.34, while Utter remained in seventh at 1:48.20. While Holm was uanble to finish her second run, fifth-year senior
Mikaela O'Brien managed to score for Dartmouth in 19th place with a time of 1:51.42.
As with the men, Vermont placed two on the podium with Moa Clementson taking the top step in 1:45.76, besting Middlebury's Lucia Bailey just 1.01 seconds. The Catamounts took the event with 131 points while Plymouth State edged out Dartmouth for second, 100-97.
Dartmouth will compete once again next weekend, this time at the St. Michael's Carnival on Friday and Saturday.
