HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's soccer team dropped the first match of its Ivy League slate to Princeton on Saturday night. The Big Green were forced to play down a man for just under 60 minutes, and a set piece goal for the Tigers gave the visitors the 1-0 victory at Burnham Field.
Dartmouth's defense held strong throughout the contest, as the defending Ivy League champion were unable to find the back of the net in open play. Princeton challenged the Big Green defense numerous times throughout the match, peppering the front of the goal with 14 corner kicks, most of which were defended well by the home squad.
"I give credit to the guys, they battled and fought for sixty minutes down a man," Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi said. "They continued to believe and give ourselves a chance down to the final seconds to almost get a draw. I'm proud of our guys. We played the defending champion of the Ivy League a man down for that long, I give our guys a lot of credit."
A red card was distributed to starting goalkeeper
Costi Christodoulou in the 31st minute following a loose ball play with Princeton's Daniel Ittycheria. Sophomore
Dylan Buchanan entered the game for Christodoulou, making three saves in relief.
"We ask for subs to come on and make a difference, and Dylan stepped up and was ready for the opportunity," Oshoniyi said of Buchanan's performance. "He made a couple of great saves, he was great in the air and he distributed the ball well. I'm proud of him to get in that moment and step up like we know he can."
The match's lone goal came in the 56th minute, as a corner kick from Princeton's Mateo Godoy set Walker Gillespie up for a goal off a header that just beat Buchanan.
Despite a lack of shots, the Big Green pressured the Tigers throughout the second half while down a man. A pair of corner kicks in the 79th minute gave Dartmouth opportunities in front of the net, but the Big Green could not capitalize.
A shot in the final seconds from
Trevor Gee whistled just wide of the goal, ending the match. Dartmouth fell to 24-40-9 in the all-time series against Princeton and hold a 17-17-2 record in Hanover against the Tigers.
The Big Green head to Worcester, Mass. for a nonconference matchup with Holy Cross on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
