Dartmouth Drops Another Close One, 4-3 to UMass Lowell

No team has scored more goals against the River Hawks this season than Dartmouth did on Sunday
HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team scored first for a second straight game and was within striking distance until the final horn, but the result was similar to Friday's near-upset of No. 15 Harvard, as the Big Green fell to visiting UMass Lowell on Sunday, 4-3. A story of the weekend continued to be Dartmouth's offense. After scoring twice against the nation's second-ranked defense on Friday, the Big Green's three goals against UMass Lowell Sunday were tied for the most the River Hawks have given up all season. UMass Lowell were 13th nationally in scoring defense entering the weekend and entered Sunday's contest with a 9-5 record.
"I think it was a really exciting and interesting game," said head coach Mark Egner. "UMass Lowell is a very strong team and does some very creative things in the way they play, and that proves to provide some problems at times, and it was a really good test for us to put ourselves up against that. There were moments in today's game that we're not especially proud of how we played, and some moments that we're incredibly proud of. I think it's important that we do the work this coming week to minimize those we don't want to keep doing and maximize the ones we want to keep in our game moving forward."
Like Friday, the Big Green got on the board first. This time, Dartmouth converted its first shot of the game as a series of passes led to Emilia Callahan finding herself in prime scoring position in front of the goal. Her hard shot beat UMass Lowell goalkeeper Eleonore Boekhorst at the 11:51 mark for Callahan's first goal of the season.
The second quarter saw no goals, but each goalkeeper had to make two saves.
A wild third quarter saw four total goals, three coming in the first 3:21. Just 32 seconds into the second half, Isabelle Halters rocketed a high shot that was perfectly placed past Dartmouth goalkeeper Hatley Post. Just 50 seconds later, the River Hawks earned a penalty corner, then penalty stroke, which Jenna Berger buried for a 3-1 lead just 1:22 into the third quarter.
Only 1:59 after going down by two, Dartmouth pulled within one as Myah Pease converted her fourth penalty stroke goal of the season in as many opportunities to pull within 3-2.
That goal would prove important, as just 1:19 into the fourth quarter, Lila Browne put home a dazzling goal following a blocked shot. That pulled Dartmouth within 4-3 with 13:41 still remaining.Â
Final shots were 20-15 in favor of the Riverhawks while Dartmouth held a 7-6 edge in penalty corners. Post finished with nine saves for the Big Green across Boekhorst, who tallied seven.
