HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth sailing team
captured a first-place finish for the second consecutive week and had strong performances at four events during its sixth weekend of the fall season. The Big Green continued to show growth at four regattas over the weekend.
On the waters of Mascoma Lake in Enfield, New Hampshire, Dartmouth secured a first-place finish at the 31st Captain Hurst Bowl regatta. The Hurst Bowl event honors Captain Bill Hurst, former captain of the US Naval Academy Sailing Team and coach of the Dartmouth sailing program for 28 years.
Will Michels and
Reese Bragg dominated the competition in the "A" division, besting the next closest duo by 20 points.
James Paul and
Caroline Oyster finished tied for first in the "C" division, while
Oliver Hurwitz and
Drew Clutterbuck claimed fifth in a very tight "B" division.
Dartmouth's victory at the Hurst Bowl event shows a growth in the program from last year's event, where the Big Green finished fifth. Dartmouth who are ranked fifth in the most recent open ICSA College Sailing rankings, bested three teams ranked ahead of it; No. 2 Yale, No. 3 Harvard and No. 4 Tulane.
"We were psyched to defend the lake at home with a win at the Captain Hurst Bowl," head coach
Justin Assad said. "The regatta tests depth with three divisions, and with top competitors like Tulane, Yale, and Harvard we were thrilled to pull out the win."
The Big Green were also in action at Kings Point in the final round of the Women's Atlantic Coast Dinghy Championship. Dartmouth finished second, only behind Yale in a competitive field of 18 programs.
Maddie Hawkins,
Aisling Sullivan and
Taylor Eastman competed in the "A" division, finishing fourth, while
Gray Hemans and
Yumi Yoshiyasu clinched third place in the "B" division. Dartmouth's strong finishes in both divisions lifted the team to a second-place finish, far ahead of the third-place finisher, Boston College.
The final round of the event displayed Dartmouth's ability against a field of 18 stellar programs. The Big Green will aim for a national championship at the same venue in May of 2023.
"Our second-place finish confirms what we already knew; we will be in the fight to win the national championship when we are back in May," Assad said.''
The Big Green were also in action at a pair of developmental events. Dartmouth finished sixth in a field of 18 teams at the Savin Hill Invite, hosted by Boston College. The event was highlighted by a sixth-place finish for
Griffin Lapham and
Faye Benjamin in the "B" division and a 10
th-place finish for
Ryan Goldstein and
Phoebe Lee in the "A" division. The Peak Foliage event was called off due to a lack of wind.
"These were great opportunities for our team to compete and represent Dartmouth," Assad said of the Savin Hill and Peak Foliage events. We were able to identify areas of our game to continue to improve."
The Big Green are back in action this weekend in three regattas, hosted by the Coast Guard, Yale, Northeastern and MIT.
