HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's hockey team fell in its home opener to Brown by a score of 2-1. The Big Green outshot the Bears 31-22 but could not overcome its ECAC Hockey foe in their second contest of the 2022-23 season.
The Big Green outshot their opponent for the second consecutive game. Senior
CC Bowlby scored Dartmouth's first goal of the season on a spectacular play in front of the net. However, goals in the first and second pushed the Bears past the Big Green.
Both goaltenders posted save percentages over .900, as Dartmouth's
Maggie Emerson stopped 20 of 22 shots. Brown was backstopped by Kaley Doyle, who made 30 saves to help her team to the win.
Bowlby,
Lauren Messier and
Jenna Donohue recorded points on Friday night. Donohue led the Big Green with five shots on net, while she,
Georgia Kraus and
Caroline Appleyard each recorded blocks.
Dartmouth's penalty kill was tested twice throughout the game and was up to the task each time. The Big Green allowed just two shots on goal over four minutes of Brown power play time and neutralized opportunities throughout each.
The scoring was kicked off just past the 10-minute mark of the first period, as Anna Hurd found the back of the net to put Brown up by one. Her second of the season was assisted by Jess Ciarrochi and Sonja Bjornson.
Other than Brown's goal, the first period was all Dartmouth. The Big Green battered Doyle with 15 shots through the first, while Brown only mustered seven. Each team was awarded a power play in the opening 20 minutes with neither finding the back of the net.
The second period was a tightly contested one, as both teams jockeyed for position throughout the middle frame. With 2:30 left to play in the second, Bowlby made a trio of beautiful moves, culminating in a goal for the Big Green. Her first of the season was assisted by Donohue and Messier.
Brown responded with a goal of its own just 54 seconds later. Maddie Morgan scored her first of the season, which was unassisted, to give the lead back to the Bears. The Big Green trailed by one with 20 minutes left to play.
Dartmouth's penalty kill was put to the test in the third as a minor penalty was assessed to
Jenna Donohue. The Big Green allowed just one shot on goal and remained perfect on the penalty kill. A defensive battle broke out in the third period. Both teams combined for 14 shots in the final period, but neither could find the back of the net.
Brown secured its second win of the season and first conference victory of 2022-23. Dartmouth's record against the Bears fell to 48-33-12 in the all-time series.
Dartmouth is set for another ECAC Hockey tilt tomorrow against No. 9 Yale. The Big Green take the ice at 3 p.m. at Thompson Arena. Admission is free as Dartmouth celebrates 50 Years of Women's Athletics. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
