HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's soccer team fell to Harvard, 2-1, on senior day in Ivy League action at Burnham Field in their final home game of the season.
Dartmouth moves to 8-6-2, 1-4-1 while Harvard improves to 10-1-3, 4-0-2.
"I'm really proud of the way our team fought," said Stacy and Nick Branca Head Coach of Women's Soccer
Ron Rainey. "We talked about doing what needed to be done to get a result against a very tough Harvard team and I felt like we fought for 90 minutes."
Allie Winstanley scored her 11
th goal of the season while
Charlotte Cyr made eight saves in net.
Hannah Griffin and Megan Mackey each scored for the Crimson while Josefine Hasbo provided two assists.
Both sides had chances early in the game, but it was the Big Green who struck first in the 25
th minute.
Sydney Brown, from just inside the Harvard half, played a high ball over the Crimson defense looking for Winstanley. The Harvard defender got to the ball first but was fended off the ball by Winstanley. Gaining possession inside the Crimson 18-yard box, Winstanley was setup perfectly for the left-footed strike to the bottom left corner.
Harvard looked to equalize just minutes later, but Ainsley Ahmadian's shot from outside the box was tipped over the bar by Cyr. On the ensuing corner, Jordan Di Verniero's header seemed to be going in. However,
Carly Retterer was well positioned at the back post to clear it off the line.
The Crimson found the equalizer 10 minutes into the second half. Griffin received a pass from Hasbo before cutting to her left and placing a shot past Cyr to tie the game, 1-1. Harvard pushed to take the lead but was repeatedly rebuffed by the Dartmouth defense and Cyr, who made several spectacular saves to keep the game level. Harvard ultimately found the winner with seven minutes remaining. A ball into the box by Ahmadian was headed back across by Hasbo to Mackey for the strike to the right side of the net.
Looking ahead to next weekend, Rainey finished by saying, "I'm excited to see us get a little bit better this week and send out our team on a high note after all the hard work and sacrifice that the team has made this year."
Dartmouth closes out the season next Saturday at Cornell. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game will be available to stream on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet.
