STONEHAM, Mass. — The Dartmouth Big Green women's golf co-captains, senior
Samantha Yao and junior
Katherine Sung, won the U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball qualifying round on Monday with a 4-under 69. The duo will next play in the eighth U.S. Women's Amateur Four-Ball Championship at The Home Course in DuPont, Washington, on May 13-17, 2023.
Needing to finish in the top two to qualify for the championship, the Big Green twosome beat out the 11 other dual entrants for medalist honors on the 6,017-yard, par-73 course at Bear Hill Golf Club. They edged out sisters Morgan and Molly Smith — with whom they were paired for the round — by a single stroke.
Teeing off at 8:36 a.m., Yao provided a birdie on the opening hole to take an early lead. She also birdied the fourth and seventh holes to give the pair a one-stroke lead over the Smiths, but Sung and Yao both found trouble on the ninth as the two settled for a double bogey, falling behind their playing partners at the turn in the process.
Sung pulled the pair back into a tie for the lead with a birdie on 11, and Yao followed with her fourth birdie of the day — the most by any player — on 12 to reclaim the lead. Both groups made par on each of the next five holes before Sung sank a birdie on 18 to match the Smiths and seal the victory.
The Dartmouth women's team will return to the links for the ACC vs. Ivy Challenge at Baltusrol on Oct. 10-11.
