NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Already guaranteed a spot in the Ivy League Tournament, the Dartmouth volleyball team came up short, 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-18), Friday night at Yale.
Â
With one match remaining in the regular season, Dartmouth dropped to 16-7 (8-5), while Yale, currently tied for first in the Ancient Eight, improved to 20-2 (12-1) as the inaugural conference tournament approaches.
Â
Dartmouth held Yale to a .205 hitting percentage, well under its season average, but hit just .118 against the Bulldog defense that ranks top-10 in the nation in opponent hitting percentage.
Ellie Blain notched seven kills for the Big Green, while
Piper Stevens,
Amelia Gibbs,
Bomi Ogunlari and
Ava Roberts followed with four apiece.
Bomi Ogunlari inched closer to the program's single-season blocks record with five. She's now just two away from breaking the mark currently held by Elisa Scudder '14, who racked up 96 blocks in 2013.
Â
Yale was led by Audrey Leak's 11 kills, and Fatima Samb, who posted 10 kills on 14 attacks. Carly Diehl tallied 39 assists.
Â
Dartmouth pushed Yale to its limit in the opening set, but eventually fell 27-25. Once trailing 11-6, the Big Green responded to tie the set at 12-all with Ogunlari's kill. Back-and-forth action ensued until Dartmouth rattled off four straight points, capped off by
Ali Silva's ace, to lead 23-21. Yale responded with a quick three-point run to earn a one-point advantage, a 25-25 tie would soon follow. Two Dartmouth errors allowed Yale to escape with the victory in the opening set.
Â
Despite Yale's eight-point run midway through the second set, Dartmouth battled back to cut the lead to 17-15 after
Emma Engstrom's ace helped Dartmouth notch six of eight points. Yale came up with key kills down the stretch, including back-to-back winners by Gigi Barr, to win the set 25-19.
Â
In the third set, Dartmouth again gave Yale a challenge, but succumbed to lengthy runs. The Big Green were on top 14-12, but were doomed by the Bulldogs' eight-point. From that point on, Yale attack errors were the only points the Big Green could muster as Barr eventually sealed the match with a final kill.
Â
Dartmouth finishes the weekend Saturday at Brown. The match begins at 5 p.m. and it will be streamed live on ESPN+.
