Comeback Falls Just Short in Double OT on Senior Day

Dartmouth loses its fifth straight Ivy League game by a single goal, while its other two league defeats were by just two
HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team forced overtime with goals late in the third and fourth quarters, then continued that momentum into the extra session, but the Big Green couldn't net the game-winner and it was Penn who scored 1:11 into the second overtime to walk away 3-2 winners on Saturday. Payton Altman and Emilia Callahan scored Dartmouth's goals, while Hatley Post was strong in making four saves on the day, including a huge stop in the final minute of the first overtime.
The loss marked Dartmouth's fifth straight one-goal defeat in Ivy League play.
"Coming out of last year, one of the things we acknowledged we struggled with as a team was getting ourselves back into games," said head coach Mark Egner. "We've done a wonderful job this year of correcting that and putting ourselves in positions where we could really compete.
"Today, before the game, we said we have one last run out together as a group," Egner continued. "Let's make sure we leave nothing behind, that we don't walk off the field disappointed with our effort, that we feel we give everything for each other. To go two down, to get ourselves back into the game and to feel like we were in the ascendency towards the end of the game really spoke to that."
A defensively-focused start saw Penn hold a 6-2 first-quarter edge in shots, but only one shot was on goal, which Post saved. The second quarter was similar, with the Quakers holding a 4-1 edge, and the only goal coming off the stick of Penn's Maya Geller on a penalty stroke. It came with 1:33 left in the quarter, and half.
The Quakers converted a penalty corner with just over four minutes left in the third to go up 2-0. But just over three minutes later, Dartmouth answered. Off a corner of its own, Bronwyn Bird fired the ball towards cage, which Altman redirected past Quakers' goalkeeper Frederique Wollaert to pull the Big Green within 2-1 heading to the fourth.
Overtime saw the Big Green tally five shots and create three penalty corners before Penn had either. However, they couldn't find the game-winner, as Wollaert made two saves in that time.
On the other side, Post made a huge stop with 20 seconds on the clock to help send the game to a second overtime period.
For the game, shots were 20-14 in favor of Penn, but shots on goal were even at seven. Wollaert finished with five saves, across Post's four. Dartmouth held a 10-5 edge in penalty corners.
With the end of Saturday's game came the end of impactful careers for four different seniors (Devletian, Holley Cromwell, Amélie Perrier and Myah Pease), with two others (Post and Meg Barnes) planning on returning for a fifth year.
"During the summer, the captains and I read a book, Legacy, and in there, they talk about leaving the uniform in a better place and I think this group really did that," said Egner. "To go through everything they went through between a changing coaching staff, the impact of COVID-19, the ability to be on or off campus and being impacted by that, they've had a lot of setbacks and they have come to practice every day with a smile on their face, with a determination and a dedication to work harder and get better.
"They've evolved as players and people during their time here," Egner continued. "We're going to miss those who are moving on and we're glad a couple are staying to give us another run through. It's just a special group of people and I'm proud to have had the opportunity to work with them."

The fourth shot of the quarter was off the stick of Callahan, as she one-timed a centering pass from Lauren Devletian past Wollaert to even the score at two. "The goals that we scored were very nice goals," said Egner. "Lauren Devletian getting her first-career point just shows the growth this program is going through.
