VERNON, B.C. — The Dartmouth men's and women's Nordic ski teams spent last week competing in Super Tour cross country races held at Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre in preparation for the carnival season that opens up next month.
The week began with the classic sprints, which were followed by the 10K free, free sprints and 10K classic. Sophomore
John Steel Hagenbuch made a good first impression entering his first season on the Big Green team, reaching the podium in three of the four events. His best finish came in the men's 10K free, claiming second in 25:24.7, a mere half-second behind the winner. He also took third in both the men's free sprints and the 10K classic (28:26.3) for good measure.
Another sophomore,
Jasmine Drolet, provided the top finish on the women's side, placing ninth in the 10K classic yesterday with a time of 33:46.3. She had Dartmouth's best time in the 10K free as well, crossing the tape in 14th at 31:13.8, a few seconds ahead of former Big Green skier Erika Flowers ('12).
The other top-20 finish in the open races was provided by freshman
Ava Thurston in the women's free sprints, advancing to the quarterfinals before settling for 14th place. In the U20 sprints, freshman
Anja Grover advanced to the women's semifinals and finished 12th, while freshmen
Jack Lange and
Cooper Camp both qualified for the finals and wrapped up the event in third and sixth place, respectively.
The carnival season begins with the Bates Carnival on Jan. 12-14 at Sunday River and Black Mountain.
