BEIJING — The Dartmouth action at the 2022 Winter Olympics continued over the weekend with an alumnus and three alumnae competing in their respective events.
Tommy Ford '12 finally got the opportunity to ski at the Olympics today, posting the second-best time for Team USA in the men's giant slalom. He was in 19th place after the first run, but he improved seven spots with the seventh-fastest time on his second tour on the slopes, claiming 12th overall in 2:12.41. The course was as difficult as ever to navigate as nearly half of the field of 89 skiers did not finish the two runs, including 33 on the first attempt. Ford is expected to race in the men's slalom on Wednesday as well.
Laura Stacey '16 and the women's hockey team from Canada quickly left no doubt as to the outcome of their semifinal contest with Switzerland today, jumping out to a 5-0 lead before 11 minutes had elapsed en route to a 10-3 triumph. Stacey assisted on one of the 10 Canadian goals, and the team will next play in the gold-medal game in a much-anticipated game against Team USA. The puck drops on that game on Wednesday at 11:10 p.m. (EST).
On Saturday, Rosie Brennan '11 was part of the women's 4x5K relay team that finished sixth overall. Brennan skied the second leg for the four-woman squad that completed the course in 55:09.2, just under a minute-and-a-half behind the gold-medal winning team from the Russian Olympic Committee, but more than a minute-and-a-half ahead of Switzerland in seventh place.
Yesterday, biathlete Susan Dunklee '08 finished 40th in the women's 10K pursuit. As she noted after the race, she was competing on her birthday, something she is no stranger to doing. "Today happens to be my birthday and I have so many amazing memories of racing Dartmouth carnival races on my birthday. It's always been the big championship race of the season. It's really nice to have such a good community of people, whether it's here or at Dartmouth or New Hampshire. The skiing community is just an amazing group of people to spend a birthday with."
Dunklee still has the women's 4x6 relay on Wednesday and the 12.5K mass start on Saturday. Brennan and Julia Kern '19 can look forward to the women's team sprint classic on Wednesday as well as the 30K mass start free on Sunday. The only Big Green skier yet to make her 2022 Olympics debut is Tricia Mangan '19, who is slated to race in the women's alpine combined on Thursday.
