HANOVER, N.H. – After a dominating win over Saint Michael's on Friday night, Dartmouth women's hockey welcomed the Saint Anselm Hawks to Hanover, looking to win their second straight game.
The Big Green and Hawks would trade goals back and forth in the first period, but two Dartmouth goals in the middle frame sealed the 4-2 Dartmouth victory.
With the win, Dartmouth finishes the first half of the season at 4-10-2, just one game shy of their entire 2024-25 season win total.
The Big Green picked up Saturday right where they left off on Friday. At the 3:55 mark of the first period,
Meredith Jensen and
Izee Powell regrouped the puck, before finding
Cally Dixon on the wall. She carried it into the offensive zone, beating a defender and eventually the goaltender to make it a 1-0 game.
Just before the halfway mark of the first, Saint Anselm committed its first penalty of the game, sending the Big Green to the power play. Despite being a player down, the Hawks capitalized, springing a player on a 2-on-1 who buried the puck for a shorthanded goal, tying the game at one.
Despite momentum seemingly switching in Saint Anselm's favor, Dartmouth continued to pressure on its power play. Just 24 seconds after the Hawks tied the game, Dartmouth retook the lead.
Jensen picked up the puck in the neutral zone off a Hawks clear. She carried it into the neutral zone before making her move and beating the goaltender for her first goal of the night, and second point of the night.
"They're a good team, and they can score goals, and they play a pressure kill. So they went and got one," Head Coach
Maura Crowell said about the shorthanded goal her team surrendered. "The best part was our response to it on the same PP to get one back. Good to see from the group."
Before the period would end, Saint Anselm tied the game, finding the back of the net with just over two minutes to play, making it a 2-2 game through twenty minutes of play.
The Big Green took three penalties in the middle frame, but still found a way to generate offense, outshooting the Hawks 10-7. Right before their second penalty kill of the period would expire, Jensen once again made her move.
The puck came right to her on a failed Hawks breakout, and she made them pay, scoring her second goal of the night and the Big Green's first shorthanded goal since 2023.
With 20 seconds to play, Dartmouth once again extended its lead.
Sydney Putrah sent a puck on net from the corner that just squeezed between the post and the sliding goaltender, making it a 4-2 game headed into the final period.
Dartmouth outshot Saint Anselm 17-8 in the final period, en route to the 4-2 victory. Jensen finished the night with three points, the only multi-point scorer for the Big Green, while five additional skaters found their way onto the scoresheet with one point each.
Jiahui Zhan made her second consecutive start in net, allowing two goals and making 22 total saves.
Overall, Crowell described Saturday as a good hockey game, emphasizing the importance of her special teams.
"It was the difference today. We were in the box quite a bit there, especially in the second," Crowell said. "So, it was a lot of stop and go, you're playing the same players over and over, so for them to dig deep and Grace [Zhan] to dig deep there and keep it zero goals against on the kill was awesome."
Saturday's matchup with the Hawks was Dartmouth's final game of the 2025 calendar year. The Big Green will not be back in game action until Friday, January 2 when they travel to take on the Vermont Catamounts.
"We're obviously happy to end on a high note. I think reflecting on 2025 is important to do as well," Crowell said. "We want to come back rejuvenated and excited to attack 2026."
