HANOVER, N.H. – In one of only of two Division I women's hockey games Friday, the Big Green welcomed the Saint Michael's Purple Knights to Thompson Arena for the first matchup between the two teams in program history.
The Big Green found the back of the net once in the first period before exploding for seven goals in the middle frame en route to a 10-0 victory over Saint Michael's. It is the first time Dartmouth has scored 10 goals in a game since a 10-5 victory over Yale in 2012.
With the win, Dartmouth moves to 3-10-2 on the season.
Ella Inglis opened the scoring at the 5:16 mark of the first period.
Shae Messner found
Hailey Maguire who took a shot into a Purple Knights' defender. Falling to the ice, Maguire poked the puck to Inglis in front of the net who beat the goaltender for her first of the season, giving Dartmouth a 1-0 lead.
"The first one was a great play by Shae and Hailey. Hailey had a great attack on the net, and I was lucky to be at the right spot and bury it," Inglis said.
The Big Green outshot the Purple Knights 31-1 in the first frame, but it remained a one goal game headed into the second.
"I think putting up 30 shots in the first period was inevitably going to help us get at their goalie and get at their defense," Head Coach
Maura Crowell said about her team's play in the first 20 minutes. "So, credit the players with coming out on fire tonight, creating a lot of offense. We tweaked a couple of things [in the intermission], but I think it was just a matter of time."
Goals came quickly and often for the Big Green in the second period. Just under two minutes in,
Dayton O'Donoghue kept possession of the puck for the Big Green, before dealing it off to
Sophia Chard who found Maguire wide open at the dot. Her shot deflected up and over the goaltender, giving Dartmouth a 2-0 lead.
About four minutes later,
Hamilton Doster found Messner in space. She carried the puck through the neutral zone and into the offensive zone, before placing it perfectly on Inglis' stick. She tipped it into the net for her second of the game.
At the 6:55 mark, Dartmouth struck again.
Kenzington Lehman picked up a loose puck high in the zone, carried it down the wall, and sent a pass to
Bridget Pringle who poked it into the far side of the net, making it a 4-0 game.
Inglis continued to find her way onto the scoresheet.
Mia Buonarosa won her battle in front of the net, sending the puck to Inglis at the point. She sent the puck to the opposite point to a wide open
Izee Powell who ripped a shot. The shot was partially blocked by the Purple Knights, but it changed direction and found its way into the net, as Dartmouth took a 5-0 lead.
Shortly thereafter, Chard carried the puck into the zone. Her centering pass didn't connect, but O'Donoghue picked up the loose puck and sent it around the boards for
Meredith Jensen. The defender took a tour of the zone, before finding her lane and burying it in her 100
th career game for her first goal of the season.
After collecting two assists of her own, O'Donoghue found the back of the net for her first career goal. The junior was in the right place at the right time, finding a rebound loose in the crease to make it a seven-goal game.
Not even a minute later, Dartmouth struck again. Messner, who had already tallied two assists, forced a turnover and buried her second of the year, scoring the Big Green's eighth goal of the game, and seventh of the period.
The Purple Knights held Dartmouth off the scoreboard for the first eight minutes of the third period. After taking a five-minute major and sending the Big Green on the power play,
Hamilton Doster was able to add to the score and get her second of the season.
Miami Jones and
Anne Averill collected the assists as Doster was able to squeeze the puck through the five hole as she fell to the ice.
In the final minute, Chard added a goal to her three-assist night. Jones sent the puck in front and Chard tipped it home, wrapping her night with four total points, the most of any Big Green player.
"I think we had a lot of space, so we really took advantage of moving the pucks to the net, getting open, moving down low to up high which is what coach talks about a lot," Chard said about what she was looking for on the ice. "So, I think we worked on getting to the net, working on our tips, screening the goalie, and I think we were successful with that."
In addition to Chard's four-point night, Buonarosa (2), Doster (2), Messner (3), O'Donoghue (3), Jones (2), Averill (2), Inglis (3), and Maguire (2) all had multi-point nights. Powell, Lehman, Pringle, and Jensen each finished the night with one point.
Chard, who led the Big Green in points, and Inglis who led the team in goals, have stepped into important center roles as underclassmen this season. While Crowell said everybody played a good game, she noted Chard and Inglis really set the tone.
"Those players set the tone early for us and continued to play the same way for 60 minutes," Crowell said. "Those are two big centers for us, and we drive a lot of offense through our centers. So really good to see them producing and probably feeling a little relieved that they found the back of the net."
Inglis said the product on the ice Friday was what the team practiced.
"Tough, simple, hard," Inglis said. "We put our heads down, worked hard… Battles were tough, and we just really stuck with the game plan and were rewarded."
Chard echoed her teammate. "We were working on the simple plays, making simple passes, trying to do everything the coaches are teaching us and putting that all together," she said.
Defensively, the Big Green were dominant. In addition to maintaining possession for most of the game, Dartmouth allowed only three Purple Knights' shots and collected five blocks.
Jiahui Zhan got the start, making two saves through two periods.
Eleanor Rogers made her first appearance of the season, making two saves in the final 20 minutes.
The Big Green will be back in action Saturday, December 13, hosting the Saint Anselm Hawks for the final game before the holiday break.
Crowell said while her team gained offensive confidence in Friday's win, Saturday is a new day.
"Saint Anselm is a good team, so we don't take anybody lightly," Crowell said. "Can't let this one get to our heads, but we certainly want to enjoy it. It's well-earned and it's been a little while, so we're excited about that and hopefully we bring confidence and good hockey to the ice tomorrow."
Both Inglis and Chard echoed their head coach.
"It's big momentum for us. We really have to attack it like a brand-new game. Use our confidence offensively but by no means take them easy," Inglis said.
"I think getting at it right off puck drop. I feel like we had the momentum going today. We played a full 60 minutes, so we just need to keep up the intensity and get another win," Chard added.
Puck drop against the Hawks is set for 2 p.m. There will also be a postgame skate with the Big Green following the game.
