MELBOURNE, Fla. — Sophomores
Katherine Sung and
Penelope Tir each produced a 7-over 79 in the final round of the Columbia Classic at the Duran Golf Club on Monday, helping the Dartmouth women's golf team leapfrog over Albany into 13th place in the team standings.
Sung sank a pair of birdies during her round, while Tir had three of her own to turn in the Big Green's overall low score for the tournament at 234 (+18), tying her for 44th in the 80-player field.
With winds blowing at about 15 mph, every team found the course to be a bit tougher today with only one team not posting their worst round of the tournament. Virginia Tech, ranked 26th nationally in a field featuring six top-40 teams, overtook No. 30 Texas Tech by a single stroke to take the team title with a 16-over 880 at the 6,357-yard, par-72 course. Second-ranked Oklahoma State settled for third, four strokes back.
A day after tying for the most pars made over the first two rounds, Tir had a bit of a wilder morning thanks in part to the wind. Her round began in similar fashion, parring 14 and 15 to start, but she had just two more pars for the next nine holes with one birdie mixed in. Tir did settle down for the final seven holes with two birdies and four pars, which helped her move up four places in the individual standings into a tie for 44th.
Sung, recovered from a difficult opening round yesterday to shoot a 79 in each of her last two rounds. Like Tir, she finished up with eight pars over her final 18 holes with two birdies and seven bogeys. She enjoyed the largest jump in the standings, moving up seven places into a tie for 67th at 28-over par (244).
Others contributing to the team score were freshman
Claire Xu who tied for 57th overall with a 238 (+22) and senior
Kristen Chen in a tie for 71st with a 249 (+33). Senior
Emilia Hoppe, who walked onto the team in the fall, completed her first collegiate tournament as well.
Isabella Fierro of Oklahoma State was one of just two players to shoot even par on the day, which was enough to secure medalist honors. She finished up her three rounds with a 2-under 214, the lone player to beat par at the event. Yesterday's leader, Emily Mahar of Virginia Tech, ended up at 1-over par dropped back three spots while her teammate Becca DiNunzio, and Amy Taylor of Texas Tech climbed into a tie for second at even par.
Dartmouth will next play in the Yale Spring Invitational, a one-day, two-round event, on Feb. 26 in Savannah, Georgia.
