MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — With another day of alpine skiing canceled — this time due to high winds that broke the lift — the first day of the Middlebury Carnival featured the classical cross country races. Freshman
Wally Magill recorded the best finish for Dartmouth, taking seventh in the men's 10K, as the Big Green ended the day in third place with 184 points.
Vermont skiers won both races at the Rikert Nordic Center and took four podiums in all to jump ahead of the field with 271 points, while host Middlebury was second in the two races, leaving the Panthers 52 points behind the Catamounts but 35 ahead of Dartmouth.
The racing didn't begin until 1 p.m. due to the conditions, with the women hitting the trails for the 5K classic. Two of Dartmouth's top skiers — freshman
Jasmine Drolet and senior
Rena Schwartz — did not compete today, but senior
Callie Young managed to sneak into the top 10 with a time of 14:13.7. Two of her teammates weren't far behind in freshman
Emma Reeder in 12th (14:20.5) and sophomore
Garvee Tobin in 13th (14:25.6) as the trio combined for 94 points, good for third.
Vermont's Anna Bizyukova took the top step of the podium with a time of 13:18.6 while two other Catamounts crossed the tape in second and third for a clean sweep of the event for 141 points. Middlebury did just enough to eke past the Big Green with 102 points and take second.
On the men's side, Magill reached the midpoint of the 10K race in fifth, though he wouldn't know due to the individual start. Every skier saw the times on their second lap increase by 50 seconds or more, including Magill, who ended up in seventh with a time of 24:55.8. Classmate
Luke Allan, who boasted two podiums with a victory in the freestyle race last week, closed out the race in 12th place (25:20.4), while junior
Cameron Wolfe was 19th (25:47.5).
Jacob Nystedt of Vermont won gold with a time of 24:00.9, less than four seconds ahead of Middlebury's Peter Wolter, the reigning EISA Men's Nordic Skier of the Week. Other Catamounts were fourth and fifth to give their team 130 points, 13 ahead of Middlebury. Bowdoin just edge the Big Green by a 91-90 margin for third.
The final day of the carnival is expected to feature the giant slalom — which will count double the points to make up for today's cancellation — and the freestyle races, 15K for the women and 20K for the men.
