PRINCETON, N.J. — The Ivy League announced its weekly players of the week in men's basketball today, and Dartmouth forward
Aaryn Rai was selected as the Co-Player of the Week. Rai is the first Big Green player to earn the award in just over two years.
A fifth-year senior from Markham, Ontario, Rai led Dartmouth to one upset last week and nearly a second one as he averaged 23.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in the two games while shooting 63.3 percent from the floor. Last Tuesday, he scored a team-high 19 points — 17 in the second half — while stuffing the stat sheet with five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and three steals, but the Big Green came up just short in a 66-61 loss to Yale, which was sitting atop the conference standings. In his final contest at Leede Arena on Saturday, the 6-6 forward delighted the home crowd with a career-high 27 points (again scoring 17 after the intermission) on 11-of-15 field goals to go with 11 rebounds for his second double-double in eight days and seventh of his career. He was one of five Dartmouth players to score in double figures in the 84-70 triumph over Penn, the No. 3 team in the Ancient Eight.
Rai shared the award with Brown's Jaylan Gainey, who posted a double-double in a win over Columbia with 25 points and 12 rebounds while converting all nine field goals he attempted.
Dartmouth (8-16, 5-8 Ivy) was eliminated from qualifying for the Ivy League Tournament when Harvard lost in the final seconds to Princeton on Sunday. But the Big Green could still finish in the top half of the standings (tying for fourth) if they can defeat the Crimson (13-12, 5-8 Ivy) on their home court in Cambridge on Saturday and Columbia knocks off Cornell, which clinched the fourth seed with thanks to the Tigers' win yesterday. The season finale tips off at Lavietes Pavilion at 2 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Notes: The last player to earn a weekly honor from the league was
Chris Knight on Feb. 17, 2020 … Rai surpassed 900 points for his career with his performance against Penn.
