CRAFTSBURY, Vt. — With the cancellation of the alpine races at the Vermont Carnival due to unsafe conditions created by the winter storm, the cross country events were on center stage at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center once again today. Dartmouth freshman
Jasmine Drolet continued to dominate the EISA field, winning the women's 10K classic by more than 35 seconds, helping the Big Green wrap up the weekend in second place behind host Vermont by a score of 518-436. Middlebury finished third exactly 100 points behind Dartmouth.
Racing in just her second carnival, Drolet won for the third time in four events. At the midway point of the individual start race, she was 24 seconds ahead of her closest competitor, Catamount Anna Bizyukova. When she crossed the finish line, that advantage had grown to 35 seconds as she completed both laps in under 16 minutes — the only collegian to do so on either lap — to post a time of 31:34.2.
Senior
Callie Young, who was the Big Green's top skier yesterday by taking second in the sprint skate (just ahead of Drolet in third),put together two solid laps to place fifth overall in 16:22.8, while junior
Mara McCollor crossed the tape in 10th place in 33:25.1. But Vermont managed to squeak out the team victory with skiers finishing second, fourth and sixth to amass 125 points to the Green's 120.
Two freshmen continued to lead the Dartmouth men's Nordic team with
Wally Magill finishing the 10K classic in fifth place in 28:48.9 and
Luke Allan in 10th with a time of 29:05.3. The two were racing together in a pack with Allan just ahead of Magill at the checkpoint, but Magill managed to pull away from his teammate down the stretch. Wrapping up the scoring skiers for Dartmouth was junior
Cameron Wolfe in 13th in 29:21.5, giving the Green 99 points as a team, third behind Middlebury (106) and the Catamounts (135) as Finn Sweet claimed the top step of the podium for Vermont with two of his teammates placing third and fourth.
Next weekend brings the Dartmouth Carnival back to the circuit for the first time in three years. The alpine events will take place at the Dartmouth Skiway while the cross country races will be held at the Oak Hill Touring Center on Friday and Saturday.
Note: The Vermont Carnival also served as a SuperTour weekend with several former Big Green skiers competing, including Katharine Ogden '21 who cruised to victory in the 10K classic by more than 26 seconds.
