Dartmouth will spend its spring break in the state of Georgia with a day trip to Alabama mixed into the 10 games on the docket between March 17 and 22, including a pair of games against 21st-ranked Georgia at the UGA Classic. The Big Green are looking to quickly put an end their seven-game skid since winning two of their first three games of the season, beginning with a twinbill at Georgia State on Thursday.
The bats have yet to get on track, though rookie
Alaana Panu has a .618 OPS with a pair of doubles and four runs, and
Kate Farren and
Kelly Beaupre have driven in a team-high four runs apiece. Keep an eye on
Billie McFadyen and
Mary Beth Cahalan during the trip; the duo combined to hit over .500 in the five games that made up the 2021 season. When they go, the offense goes.
On the mound,
Brooke Plonka (1-5, 2.90) has thrown nearly half of Dartmouth's 66 innings, limiting opposing hitters to a .246 average.Freshman Racel McCarroll has been effective as well with a 2.38 ERA in five appearances (one start) spanning 17.2 frames.
Look Back at Recent Games
• On March 4-6, Dartmouth played five games at the Tennessee Invitational, hosted by the 17th-ranked Lady Vols.Unfortunately, the Big Green dropped all five contests, starting with a hard-fought, 1-0 defeat in eight innings against South Alabama.
• The bats had trouble getting started, scoring three runs in the five games, though
Izzy Kam had three hits and an RBI and
Mary Beth Cahalan reached base five times with a pair of hits and three walks.
• Both Plonka and McCarroll acquitted themselves on the mound well considering the stiff competition with the former posting a 3.32 ERA and the latter a 3.18 ERA in a combined 23.2 innings of work at the tournament.
• The Big Green did hold a 2-0 lead over South Alabama in their final game in Knoxville, but a four-run fifth for the Jaguars denied Dartmouth in a 5-2 loss.
Georgia State (8-16) — March 17 (DH)
• The Panthers have lost seven of its last eight games with five of those contests against ranked opponents, including a 4-1 victory over No. 22 Louisiana last Friday.
• These are the first games ever between these two on the softball diamond.
• Bailee Richardson has been GSU's top hitter with a .329 average, seven home runs and 22 RBIs.
• On the mound, Emily Buck is the team's workhorse with a 4-4 record and 3.17 ERA over 46.1 innings.
Illinois (11-7) — March 18 at UGA Classic
• Five of the Figthing Illini's seven losses have come against ranked teams, as have two of their wins.
• As a team, Illinois is hitting .304 on the season with six regulars topping .300, led by Megan Ward at .388.
• Sydney Sickels has struck out 70 batters in 50.1 innings while posting a 2.09 ERA.
No. 21 Georgia (22-4) — March 18 and 20 at UGA Classic
• The Bulldogs may be ranked 21st in the country but enter this game having lost their last two contests to South Carolina and rival Georgia Tech.
• Georgia is hitting a whopping .357 with an OPS of 1.123 and 50 home runs.
• Sydney Chambley has been the most potent offensive player, slugging .932 with 10 doubles and nine long balls.
• Georgia has two solid starters, but Madison Kerpics has been terrific as mostly a reliever with a 1.74 ERA in 52.1 innings.
Mercer (6-17) — March 19 and 20 at UGA Classic
• The Bears have won three of their last four since suffering an eight-game skid.
• The bats have produced 3.6 runs per game with Kenlie Harvard as their top hitter (.339, two homers, eight RBIs).
• Mercer leans on Hannah Pitts (2-8, 4.93) to handle a majority of their pitching, and she has held opponents to a .257 average while allowing 15 home runs.
Jacksonville State (14-8) — March 21
• A trip across the border into Alabama is on the docket, and the Gamecocks have won five in a row and seven of their last eight.
• JSU has a balanced offensive attack with seven players bashing between two and four homers.
• The pitching staff has a 2.70 ERA with Kat Carter (7-4, 2.58) carrying the majority of the load.
Georgia Tech (16-8) — March 22 (DH)
• The spring trip ends with a twinbill against the Yellowjackets, which have an ACC series against Louisville this weekend before squaring off against the Big Green.
• Tricia Awald leads the team with a .400 average and 19 RBIs, and the team has hit at a .294 clip thus far.
• Dartmouth can expect to see Blake Neleman (10-4, 2.03) and Chandler Dennis (3-4, 2.54) on the mound as the duo has thrown nearly 85 percent of their innings.
What's Next
Dartmouth dives into Ivy League play by hosting Yale for a three-game series on March 26-27. The doubleheader on Saturday will begin at 12:30 p.m. as will the game on Sunday. All three contests will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Brett Franklin calling the action.
