Gibbons Wins Close Match in Loss to No. 50 UC Santa Barbara

The Big Green junior won a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 1 position in the 6-1 loss to the Gauchos on Tuesday
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Dartmouth men's tennis fell to No. 50 UC Santa Barbara, 6-1, in a neutral match at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club on Tuesday. The Big Green dropped to 7-5, while the Gauchos improved to 11-4.
"Every match we play, we continue to develop and shape this team's indentity," Xander Centenari '13, the John Kenfield and Chuck Kinyon Head Coach of Men's Tennis, said. "The score doesn't reflect how close this match was today. We had match points on court two for the doubles point. In spite of losing six first sets in singles, we battled back with great energy and fight and had set points in the second sets on courts 1, 3, 4, 5 and six, with a gritty match win on court one after the match was decided. We just have to keep working hard and trusting in the process. It is only a matter of time and effort before we can swing a match like this our way. All credit to UCSB for outplaying us early in the isngles and staying really tough from start to finish."
Daniel Webb and Andy Ilie won the first doubles match on court three, defeating their opponents by a score of 6-3. UCSB evened things up with a 6-4 victory at the top spot and the doubles point was decided at the No. 2 position when the Gauchos won a close one, 7-6(4).
Six straight singles victories at the No. 2, 4, 6, 5 and 3 handed the win to UC Santa Barbara. In the final match of the day on court one, Anders Gibbons came back from a dropped first set to win the second and a tiebreaker third to get a point on the board for Dartmouth.
The Big Green will take Wednesday off from matches, returning to the court on Thursday to face Loyola Marymount.
