HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth softball came back from two dropped games on Saturday to defeat Yale decisively, 10-3, on Sunday afternoon.
Maddie Katona and
Kate Farren led the Big Green with three runs apiece, while
Leila Hennessy had two and one of the team's two homeruns.
Brooke Plonka pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four.
Dartmouth (4-18, 1-2) vs. Yale (5-13, 3-3)
The Bulldogs got scoring started in the top of the first and held on to that 1-0 lead until the bottom of the second.
Kate Farren walked and scored on
Mary Beth Cahalan's first career homerun, giving the home team a 2-1 advantage.
Yale tied things up with a solo shot of its own in the next inning, but a three-run third for Dartmouth gave the home team some breathing room. After Katona was hit by the pitch, she advanced to second when
Alaana Panu singled to left field. A Farren double sent both Katona and Panu home, while Farren scored later in the inning off
Maria Angelino's single to make it a 5-2 game.
Another Bulldog homer in the first at bat of the fourth got the visitors back within three, but this was where the Big Green started to pull away. In the bottom of the fourth, Hennessy reached on a fielder's choice, and when Katona singled to left field, Hennessy took third and Katona stole second.
Billie McFadyen delivered a two-run single to center to end the inning (7-3).
Plonka got Dartmouth out of a sticky situation in the top of the fifth when bases were loaded with only one out. The next batter struck out, while the third out came from a pop up to the short stop. In the bottom of the sixth, Hennessy led off with a homer. Katona was hit by the pitch, stole second and scored off Farren's triple.
Emily Lipsett pinch ran for Cahalan, stealing second while Farren stole home for the final run of the game (10-3). Yale had two hits and stranded two in the last inning.
On Wednesday, March 30, Dartmouth will host a double header against Holy Cross. The first game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
