GRASONVILLE, Md. — The Dartmouth women's golf team took an early lead at the Prospect Bay Intercollegiate and held it through two rounds, ending the day with a 302-317—619 (+43), six strokes ahead of Penn and Quinnipiac. Sophomore
Katherine Sung is one of three players tied atop the individual leaderboard with a 7-over 151.
Teeing off on a brisk, 39-degree morning at the 6,136-yard, par-72 course at Prospect Bay Country Club, the Big Green showed no signs of being affected by the chill or the wind with two players reaching the turn at even par (sophomore
Penelope Tir and freshman
Claire Xu) and the other three at no worse than 3-over. Sung was at 2-over. By the end of the first round, it was Tir and senior
Kristen Chen with the low score for the Big Green, carding a 3-over 75, each with a pair of birdies.
Xu had a team-best our birdies in the opening round, wrapping up the 18 holes at 4-over par, which Sung matched her score with just a pair of birdies to her credit. The quartet combined for a team score of 14-over, eight strokes ahead of Penn.
In the afternoon, Sung dropped four more birdies and shaved a stroke off her initial round to shoot 75 (+3), climbing five spots into a tie for the lead with Kaylee Sakoda of Quinnipiac and Natalie Cao of Penn. Those four birdies, along with the two she sank in the first round, gave a tournament-best six over 36 holes. And Although she did not score as well in the second round, Chen still concluded the day in the top 10 with a 12-over 156, tied for eighth.
Meanwhile, junior
Samantha Yao, who won medalist honors the last time out two weeks ago, improved by two strokes over the two rounds, posting a 7-over 79 with a birdie and 10 pars, leaving her tied for 15th at 16-over par. Xu was included in the team score as well with an 82 (+10), putting her in 13th place at 14-over par (158), and Tir dropped back into a tie for 20th.
All told, Dartmouth had 18 birdies as a team, five more than any other squad.
"Today was a great effort with everyone contributing," said
Alex Kirk, the Carolyn A. Pelzel '54a Head Coach of Women's Golf. "Kristen and Claire really stepped up today, and when all five of our players are contributing, we are going to score. We played the par-3s and 4s really well, but we could improve on the par-5s. With just a little cleaning up here and there, we can certainly improve upon our performance today."
Dartmouth will tee off the final round tomorrow morning beginning at 8:45 a.m.
