PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Dartmouth got two complete-game efforts from seniors
Brooke Plonka and
Madie Augusto while freshman
Alaana Panu led the offense with a pair of hits in each game as the Big Green swept a doubleheader at Penn on Tuesday afternoon by scores of 4-0 and 4-2. Dartmouth improved to 16-21 on the season and 10-4 in the Ivy League, while the Quakers dropped to 10-29 overall and 5-12 in conference play.
Plonka (11-10) once again dominated in the circle as she hurled her fifth shutout of the season, scattering six hits and one walk while striking out eight. The southpaw won for the ninth time in her last 10 starts, retiring the side in order in the first and seventh stanzas. Three times Penn managed to put two base runners on in an inning, only to have Plonka get the big outs when she needed them.
The Big Green bats gave Plonka a 2-0 lead in the second after junior
Kate Farren ripped a one-out double, Panu was hit by pitch and the duo pulled off a double steal. Freshman
Jenna Brown followed with an RBI single to left, and junior
Maria Angelino followed with one of her own.
Farren and Panu were in the middle of the action in the fifth as well. Senior
Billie McFadyen led off the inning with a walk, but was still on first with two down when Farren hit her second double of the game, scoring McFadyen. Although Panu quickly got down in the count 0-2, she hit the next pitch to center for an RBI single to complete the scoring in the game.
The bottom four hitters in the order each drove in a run with Farren, Panu and Brown each collecting two hits as well.
Julia Longo (4-14) went the distance for the Quakers, allowing the four runs on nine hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts.
The second game did not start as well for the Big Green as Penn put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out before Corrie Phillips also walked to force in a run. Dana Anderson then lofted a fly ball to center for a sacrifice fly and a 2-0 Quaker lead.
Dartmouth quickly cut into that lead as Panu led off the second by reaching on a three-base error and Brown shot a single back through the middle to score Panu.
McFadyen got things going in the third with a leadoff single, took second on a wild pitch and scored when junior
Maddie Katona reached on an infield single and the throw to first got away. One out later Farren cracked her third double of the day, giving the Green a 3-2 lead.
The brief wildness that Augusto worked through in the first inning showed up again in the bottom of the third as she walked the bases loaded with two out. But she was able to gather herself and induced a fly to center on a full-count pitch for the third out, preserving the one-run lead.
Augusto retired eight batters in a row before Madison Bauerle hit a one-out double in the sixth. Although she advanced to third on a ground ball, she was stranded there when Augusto pumped a 2-2 pitch past Danica Larwill to retire the side.
McFadyen provided an insurance run in the seventh with a leadoff solo blast over the fence in left, giving Augusto a two-run cushion. It turned out she didn't need it, despite Penn putting the tying runs on base with two out. Augusto finished with a flourish, recording her fourth strikeout on her 123rd pitch to close out the victory.
Dartmouth amassed 10 hits in the nightcap, led by McFadyen and Panu with two apiece.
Bella Fiorentino (3-6) took the defeat for allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits and a walk in 2.1 innings in the circle. Brianna Brown had three of the Quakers' six hits from the leadoff spot in the order.
The two teams will conclude their series on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
