The Big Green have scored at least one goal in each of their first seven games for the first time since 2015

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell scored a first-quarter goal, then added an insurance tally in the third and fourth quarters, which proved too much for the Dartmouth field hockey team to overcome in a 3-1 loss in the Ivy League opener on Friday. Meg Barnes scored in the final minute on an impressive shot, her second straight game with a goal, but it wasn't enough, as the Big Green's winning streak ends at three. Fellow senior Hatley Post made five saves in goal, including some highlight-reel stops.

"Obviously as a group, we're disappointed with the results," said Dartmouth head coach Mark Egner. "Coming into this weekend, we had high hopes and optimism and I don't think our energy or performance matched those hopes. We were a little disappointed. Postgame, we shared some honest reflections with each other and laid some groundwork to move forward. Now, we need to commit to doing the work."

Despite the loss, Dartmouth did allow its fewest goals at Cornell since 2012. The Big Green have also scored in each of their first seven games of the season, the first time that's happened since 2015.

The Big Red outshot Dartmouth 5-0 in the first quarter, scoring at the 11:07 mark on a rebound attempt.

The Big Green responded to outshoot Cornell 2-1 in the second quarter, but the margin remained 1-0 at the half. Boau-Lilly Shepherd fired Dartmouth's first shot on goal in the 25th minute, but Cornell goalkeeper Aerin Park made the save.

After two spectacular early third-quarter stops by Post, Cornell added to its lead at 36:01 off a penalty corner.

The score remained 2-0 until the final five minutes, as the Big Red added a third goal, also off a corner. But Dartmouth responded, as Barnes put home her second in as many games on a reverse shot at 59:15.

The Big Red finished with an 11-4 edge in shots and 5-1 advantage in penalty corners.

"I think we had passages of play when we put some passes together and looked quite dangerous at the attacking end," said Egner. "Meg Barnes' goal was the consequence of getting some things right and it was lovely to see her take that shot with confidence.
At the other end of the field, Hatley and some defenders stepped up in a big way.There are some things to be proud of today, but ultimately, for where we want to be as a program, we want to get some wins in the Ivy League. We didn't do what we needed to do today."

Dartmouth will look to regroup when it heads to No. 11 Syracuse on Sunday to face the Orange. Gametime is 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.

"We want to put our heads down, get to work and get ready for Syracuse on Sunday," said Egner.
