NEWRY, Maine — The Dartmouth alpine teams wasted no time in asserting themselves in the 2023 season, winning both the men's and women's giant slalom at Sunday River on the first day of the Bates Carnival on Thursday. The two victories put the Big Green at the top of the standings with 226 points, 43 ahead of Colby and 51 in front of St. Michael's.
Sophomore
Allie Resnick made her collegiate debut memorable by winning the women's GS. She was the only skier to zip through the course in under a minute flat on the first run, and her second trip down the mountain was the second fastest, keeping her just ahead of St. Michael's Helene Kristoffersen with a combined time of 2:08.22. Dartmouth claimed another step on the podium thanks to sophomore
Carly Elsinger who matched Kristoffersen on the first run before settling for the third-best overall time of 2:08.59, winning the bronze.
With junior
Olivia Holm providing the final Big Green points by placing 27th with a time of 2:12.94, Dartmouth took the team title with 111 points, 10 more than Plymouth State while Colby finished third with 95.
Resnick wasn't the only stellar collegiate debut for a Big Green skier on the day as freshman
Cooper Puckett won the silver in the men's GS. He led the field after the morning run with a time of 58.32 seconds, and with another strong run in the afternoon, Puckett ended the day with a time of 2:04.24, trailing only St. Michael's Eirik Kveno (2:04.00). Dartmouth had three more finish among the top 10, starting with junior
Max Martin in seventh (2:05.35), followed by freshman
Oscar Zimmer in eighth (2:05.37) and junior
Olof Hedelin in ninth (2:05.59).
With Puckett, Martin and Zimmer providing the points, Dartmouth edged out New Hampshire to win the event, 115-107, with St. Michael's in third with 96 points and Harvard in fourth (92) as Crimson skier Frederik Haug took the final podium step.
The carnival will continue tomorrow with the slalom scheduled to be run at Sunday River and a 7.5K freestyle skate at Black Mountain.
