NEWRY/RUMFORD, Maine — Freshman
Cooper Puckett took second in the men's slalom and sophomore
Allie Resnick earned her second podium of the weekend by claiming third in the women's slalom, but Dartmouth could not hold off a hard-charging Vermont team that rallied to nip the Big Green for the team title at the Bates Carnival today. The Catamounts won three of the four events that took place, adding 489 points to their total to finish with 826, 29 ahead of Dartmouth's 797, which won the men's slalom.
Getting back on the slopes at Sunday River after yesterday's postponement due to rain, the Big Green men's alpine team finished off a weekend sweep by edging out Vermont, 109-100, led by Puckett's second-place showing. The native of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, completed the first run in fourth place, then posted the fourth-best time on his second attempt as well. But that second time was better than each of the three ahead of him, allowing him to vault into second place with a combined time of 1:26.16, 0.16 seconds behind the medalist, Mathias Tefre of Vermont. Another rookie,
Oscar Zimmer, zig-zagged his way into a top-10 finish in 1:27.34, good for eighth, while junior
Olof Hedelin scored for Dartmouth as well in 11th place at 1:27.75.
Resnick, who won the giant slalom on Thursday, completed her carnival debut by leading the Big Green to second place in the slalom, providing 44 of the team's 104 points with her podium finish. She found herself in fifth place after the first trip down the mountain but charged hard on the second run with the best time, moving up to third with a combined time of 1:38.48, barely a quarter-second behind the winner, Vermont's Caroline Jones (1:38.21). Freshman
Sammi Trudeau earned a spot in the top 10 as well with a time of 1:40.54, two spots ahead of senior teammate
Gwen Wattenmaker in 11th at 1:40.87. The Catamounts took the top two steps of the podium on their way to 124 points to win the event.
Over at Black Mountain, freshman
Ava Thurston (who finished second in yesterday's race) continued her strong debut with a fifth-place effort in the women's 10K freestyle today with a time of 28:23.4. Junior
Garvee Tobin was the next Dartmouth skier to cross the tape in 17th place with a time of 29:33.7, and sophomore
Emma Reeder took 25th in 30:12.5, giving the Green 82 points to finish fifth. Vermont claimed the first and third steps of the podium, led by Haley Brewster's 27:34.4, with Middlebury second (99), and Bowdoin and New Hampshire tied for third (85).
In the men's 10K skate, Dartmouth sophomore
Luke Allan, who finished third yesterday, was unable to ski today, so freshman
Jack Lange led the Big Green pack, despite struggling on the first of the four 2.5K laps. But thanks to posting the ninth-fastest times on the final two laps, he pulled himself up to 12th place in 24:19.1. Sophomore
Wally Magill and freshman
Cooper Camp rounded out the scoring for Dartmouth in 19th place (24:44.3) and 27th (25:10.1), respectively, giving the team 71 points to tie for fourth with Colby. Vermont had four of the top five skiers to take the top spot with 138 points, while Middlebury grabbed the next four to place second with 111 and New Hampshire took third (98).
Dartmouth will be back in action next weekend for the St. Michael's Carnival, starting on Friday.
