RIPTON, Vt. — Sophomores
Wally Magill and
Emma Reeder both finished seventh in their respective 15K classic races today at the St. Michael's Carnival, helping Dartmouth climb two spots into fourth in the team standings with 299 points following the conclusion of the Nordic events. The Big Green men and women each placed fourth while Vermont won both events to maintain its lead ahead of second-place Middlebury, 506-432.
The races at the Rikert Nordic Center began with the women's 15K featuring a mass start. At the second checkpoint, 15 skiers were bundled in a large pack separated by fewer than five seconds at the front with Reeder sitting fourth and junior
Garvee Tobin in seventh. That pack dwindled to seven with a little more than 5K to go, and Reeder remained in the group just 2.4 seconds behind the leader. By the end of the race, it came down to a pair of Vermont skiers and another from St. Lawrence vying for the gold, and Catamount Waverly Gebhardt just edged out SLU's Emma Strack by nine-tenths of a second to win the race.
Reeder finished 53.3 seconds off the pace in 48:49.9 to take seventh while Tobin placed 11th in 49:19.6. Sophomore
Tatum Witter also scored for the Big Green, wrapping up the race in 24th place with a time of 51:26.4, giving Dartmouth 84 points. Vermont took two of the three podium steps to win the event with 127 points with New Hampshire second (104) and Middlebury third (94).
The men hit the course at noon, and Vermont managed to sweep the podium, led by Ben Ogden who beat out his teammate Jacob Nystedt by more than 19 seconds with a time of 41:30.0. Only Colby's Zach Nemeth — younger brother of Dartmouth's
Alex Nemeth — threatened to break into the top three, but his late push came up about five seconds short of Catamount Peter Bakken for third place.
Magill ran a steady race, running between sixth and eighth at every checkpoint before crossing the tape in seventh place at 43:00.1. His freshman teammate,
Jack Lange, finished his race 17 seconds later in 11th place, while another rookie,
Cooper Camp, rounded out the Big Green scorers in 26th place in 44:40.4. Dartmouth's 82 points left them just ahead of Bowdoin and Colby (80) and behind Vermont (141), UNH (93) and Middlebury (93).
The alpine events won't be raced until Feb. 3-4 at Smugglers' Notch in Jeffersonville, Vermont. But both the Nordic and alpine teams will be in action at the UNH Carnival next weekend on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 27-28) with the cross country races at Jackson XC and the alpine at Mittersill.
