HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's hockey team applied consistent offensive pressure Saturday afternoon against RPI in a 2-1 loss. The Big Green outshot their opponent 33-23 at Thompson Arena but were unable to complete a weekend ECAC Hockey sweep.
The Big Green's lone goal of the game was provided by
CC Bowlby, who capitalized on a breakaway opportunity set up by
Tiffany Hill. Bowlby's sixth of the year cut RPI's lead to one in the third, however, Dartmouth was unable to complete the comeback.
Sophomore goaltender
Maggie Emerson stopped 21 of 23 shots she faced, including eight in the second period. RPI netminder Amanda Rampado turned 32 Big Green shots away in victory.
In a chippy tilt, the teams combined for eight penalties and 19 penalty minutes. Neither the Big Green nor the Engineers scored on the power play.
Dartmouth opened the contests with a strong first period. The Big Green tested Rampado 13 times, while only allowing six shots on net. RPI's defense held strong, anchored by Rampado and strong play in the faceoff circle.
The second period featured back and forth action from both squads, with RPI recording 10 shots to Dartmouth's nine. The Engineers opened the scoring just past the midway mark of the period, as Hannah Price ripped a shot from the point past Emerson.
The Engineers struck again just 34 seconds later, as Taylor Zahirnyi found the back of the net to increase her team's lead. The Big Green were unable to respond throughout the remainder of the frame, as RPI held a 2-1 advantage after two periods.
Dartmouth could not solve Rampado for most of the contest, as RPI's captain held the Big Green off the board as the third period progressed. Hill blocked a shot from the point, and forced a puck to Bowlby after drawing an interference penalty.
Bowlby made the most of a breakaway chance, as she made a move and shot the puck past Rampado to cut RPI's lead in half. Hill's assist marked her first of the 2022-23 season and both her and Bowlby recorded points in both of Dartmouth's games this weekend.
The Big Green continued to apply pressure in front of RPI's net and had numerous glorious chances to tie the game. Time ran out on Dartmouth, as the Engineers escaped with a crucial ECAC Hockey win.
Dartmouth fell to 6-15-0 with an 2-12-0 ECAC Hockey conference record, while RPI improved to 7-18-1 and 3-11-1 in conference games.
The Big Green take the ice again next weekend for a pair of conference tilts against Colgate and Cornell. Dartmouth's tilt against Colgate begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, January 27 before battling Cornell the following day at 3 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
