Big Green Pick Up Huge 81-77 Win at Defending Champ Yale

The win was Dartmouth’s first over Yale since 2015 and first at Yale since 2014
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Dartmouth men's basketball team played its most complete game of the season on Friday, not trailing for the game's final 19:30 on its way to beating defending Ivy League Tournament Champion Yale, 81-77. Junior Dusan Neskovic led the offense with a game and career high 24 points. The win snapped Dartmouth's 12-game losing streak vs. the Bulldogs, giving the Big Green their first win over Yale since 2015. Dartmouth also handed Yale its first home defeat of the season.
With the win, the Big Green improve to 5-11 and 1-1 in the Ivy League. Yale falls to 10-5 and 0-2 in the league.
"I thought our guys did a really good job executing in the first half," said Dartmouth head coach David McLaughlin. "We didn't take great care of the basketball in the first, but then going into the second half, I thought Yale came out strong. But we maintained our lead throughout. Anytime they made a run, we withstood it. I thought we took great care of the ball in the second half.
"I thought we really had an identity out there and I thought we had a toughness to us," McLaughlin continued. "I'm really proud of the guys."
Neither team led by more than three in the early going until three Yale free throws gave the Bulldogs a 15-10 advantage just over nine minutes into the contest. Four straight Dartmouth points, capped off by a steal and fastbreak layup from Cornish, pulled the Big Green within 17-16 with 8:30 on the clock.
Yale slowly chipped away to retake a 33-32 lead in the final minute, but a Robinson second-chance pull-up jumper gave Dartmouth a 34-33 halftime advantage.
The Bulldogs' Bez Mbeng opened the second-half scoring with two free throws, but an Adelekun layup on the other end gave the Big Green the lead back. From that point forward, Dartmouth wouldn't trail (although there would be multiple ties).
A Neskovic 3-pointer put the Big Green ahead, 44-39, with 16:23 on the clock. Following five consecutive Yale points, Dartmouth had an answer with back-to-back 3-pointers — from juniors Jaren Johnson and Robinson — to go up 50-44.
The Big Green lead reached seven at 54-47 and 56-49 before Yale responded with a 9-2 run to pull even at 58 and later 60. Dartmouth wouldn't let the Bulldogs in front, however, as a Johnson 3-point play with 6:04 remaining put the Big Green ahead for good, 63-60.
The advantage reached as much as six on multiple occasions. Yale tried to extend the game in the final minutes, and it almost worked, but Dartmouth hit just enough free throws down the stretch to wrap up the 81-77 victory.
For the game, the Big Green shot 46.6 percent from the floor (27-of-58), including 44.4 percent from 3-point range (8-of-18). Yale finished at 43.4 percent (23-of-53) and 14.3 percent from behind the arc (2-of-14). Free throws were aplenty, especially in the second half. Dartmouth shot 63.3 percent from the charity stripe (19-of-30) while the Bulldogs were 69.0 percent (29-of-42). The Big Green held a 37-36 edge in rebounds. Yale had 14 turnovers while Dartmouth had 12 (just two in the second half).
"We've got to get some rest tonight, we've got to dial into film tonight and tomorrow morning and just be prepared to play again," said McLaughlin. "Brown is another really good team on the road and a team that's going to be ready to attack us."

Neskovic's 24 points were one more than his previous career-high 23 points in the season opener at Fordham. He finished Friday 7-of-10 from the floor, including a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point range. Sophomore Ryan Cornish added 18 points, 12 coming after halftime, including a number of key drives and finishes late. "Dusan didn't play a lot of minutes last game, so I was happy for him and proud of the way he approached it," said McLaughlin. "Dame had workmanlike minutes and Cornish really did a good job with the ball in his hand, got us into offense.
