Four Big Green score in double figures in Saturday’s defeat
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Trailing 68-51, the Dartmouth men's basketball team staged a 14-3 run to pull within six with 2:03 still remaining, but the Big Green couldn't get any closer in a 77-70 loss at Brown on Saturday evening. Earlier in the half, the Bears reeled off eight straight points to turn a seven-point lead into a 15-point advantage, following a back-and-forth first half of basketball. Senior Dame Adelekun led Dartmouth with 17 points — which was also a game high — while junior Izaiah Robinson posted career highs in points (12) and made 3-pointers (4).
Brown shot 51.9 percent from the floor, which was too much to overcome. With the win, the Bears improve to 8-8 and 1-2 in the Ivy league. Dartmouth falls to 5-12 and 1-2 in league play.
"We didn't come out with the defensive intensity I would hope for," said Dartmouth head coach David McLaughlin. "Brown, to their credit, moved the ball well. They were making shots. They made some early threes and we just didn't respond with a gritty enough defensive performance after that."
Adelekun's 17 points came on 8-of-13 shooting, while he added five rebounds and a team-high three assists. Three others scored in double figures in Robinson (12), sophomore Ryan Cornish (12) and junior Dusan Neskovic (10). Robinson was 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
Two early 3-pointers — from senior Cam Krystkowiak and Neskovic — gave Dartmouth an early 6-2 lead. Brown responded with nine straight points as an Owusu-Anane dunk put the Bears ahead, 11-6, just over five minutes into the contest.
Brown led for much of the ensuing minutes — except following a Cornish turnaround jumper, which put the Big Green ahead 17-16 with 10:09 on the clock, and a Neskovic second-chance basket, which made the score 22-21 in favor of Dartmouth.
The teams traded baskets in the opening two minutes of the second half, with Adelekun scoring all four points for the Big Green. But that's when Brown responded with eight straight points to create some separation, taking a 55-40 advantage following two Owusu-Anane free throws.
"I thought Brown started off the second half strong," said McLaughlin. "I thought we finally got our feet settled and started playing tougher on the defensive end. We took good care of the basketball, and we rebounded fairly well, but you can't allow a team to shoot 50 percent from the floor and expect to win."
For the game, Dartmouth shot 43.1 percent from the floor (28-of-65), including 41.7 percent from 3-point range (10-of-26). Brown finished at 51.9 percent (28-of-54) and 45.0 percent from behind the arc (9-of-20). Dartmouth was 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from the free throw line while Brown was 85.7 percent (12-of-14). The Bears finished with a 33-32 edge in rebounds. Each team had just 11 turnovers.
Standing 1-2 in the Ivy League following a 1-1 weekend, Dartmouth returns home on Saturday, Jan. 14 to host Penn for its Pride Game. Opening tipoff in Leede Arena is set for 2 p.m.
"You just have to learn from both games," said McLaughlin. "You can learn from last night; you can learn from today. We need to have a really good week. We have another quality opponent we're facing and we have to be ready for that."

Two Cornish threes in the span of 40 seconds, quickly cut Dartmouth's deficit to 11. Following a Brown 3-pointer, Dartmouth continued to chip away, with a Neskovic layup pulling the Big Green within 71-65 with 2:03 still remaining.
