HAMDEN, Conn. — The Dartmouth women's hockey team played an inspired game against No. 3 Quinnipiac but fell by a score of 3-2 on the road. Despite two goals in the third, the Big Green could not overcome the Bobcats in ECAC Hockey competition.
Laura Fuoco and
Caroline Appleyard found the back of the net for Dartmouth in the final period, while
Sophie Robinson and
Kenzie Bachelor recorded assists. Appleyard's goal with 10:03 left in regulation marked the first of her collegiate career.
Sophomore goaltender
Maggie Emerson made 29 saves for the Big Green, while Quinnipiac's Catie Boudiette stopped 18 shots enroute to a win.
"The girls came out ready to go from puck drop," assistant coach
Max Gavin said. "They fought through some adversity early, but you have to give them credit. They stuck to the game plan, and they stayed on task. Obviously not the result we wanted, but we believe we showed that we can play with anybody tonight."
Quinnipiac jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, as goals from Zoe Uens and Olivia Mobley put the Big Green on the back foot. The Bobcats outshot the Big Green 13-5 in the opening frame.
The Big Green responded with a responsible defensive period in the second, allowing just seven shots, while adding six of their own. Dartmouth created chances and applied pressure throughout the second frame. Emerson stood tall, stopping every offering from the Bobcats.
Dartmouth continued to create pressure in the third period, as the momentum began shifting in the Big Green's favor. Despite this, Dartmouth could not find a response in the early stages of the period.
Fuoco cut Quinnipiac's lead in half with 13:19 left on the clock on a gritty play in front of the net. The sophomore fought hard to poke the puck past Boudiette to put Dartmouth within striking distance with plenty of time to find an equalizer. The Big Green also earned a power play on the sequence leading up to Fuoco's goal.
Quinnipiac found a response while shorthanded, as Mobley rifled a shot past Emerson to recapture a two-goal lead for the home team.
The Big Green continued to battle, as Appleyard found the back of the net just 2:03 after Quinnipiac's third goal. Bachelor ricocheted a pass off the boards, sending Appleyard on a breakaway. The junior made the most of the opportunity, putting a puck through Boudiette's five-hole to cut the deficit to one.
The Bobcats survived an offensive onslaught from the Big Green as time ran out on Dartmouth. Dartmouth fell to 5-13-0 on the season with a 1-10-0 mark in ECAC Hockey contests. Quinnipiac improves to 20-3-0 and 10-1-0 in conference tilts.
Dartmouth returns to Thompson Arena next Friday, January 13 for an ECAC Hockey matchup with Harvard. Puck drop is slated for 3 p.m. and a stream is available on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
