HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's hockey team battled the Harvard Crimson in a close contest Friday afternoon. The Big Green fell to their ECAC Hockey foe in overtime by a score of 3-2 at Thompson Arena.
Lauren Messier opened the scoring in the second period on a breakaway goal, which was assisted by
Shae Messner. Messner's assist marked the first point of her collegiate career.
Jenna Donohue also lit the lamp for the Big Green, which was assisted by
Meredith Jensen and
Laura Fuoco.
Sophomore goaltender
Maggie Emerson was stellar between the pipes for Dartmouth, as she made 31 saves on 34 shots. Alex Pellicci made 19 stops for the Crimson in the win.
"The team fought hard. We had our chances, we just couldn't bury all of them," assistant coach
Nina Rodgers said. "We just have to keep leaning in. I was really proud of our girls for digging in, not deviating from the plan and continuing to lean in. That's what we need when going forward from here."
The opening period saw Dartmouth dominate the Crimson for most of the frame. The Big Green sent nine shots Pellicci's way, while Emerson was only tested four times in the first 20 minutes. Dartmouth was also dominant in the faceoff circle during the first, winning nine of 15 draws.
Messier received a pass that sent her on an abbreviated breakaway, which she cashed in for her second of the year. The sophomore's second goal of the season was scored 6:43 into the second and gave Dartmouth a 1-0 lead over Harvard.
After a five-minute major penalty was assessed to Dartmouth, Harvard struck back to tie the game. Anne Bloomer found the back of the net to tie the contest, 1-1.
Emerson stopped 14 of 15 shots faced in the second period, including seven on the penalty kill. The Belmont, Massachusetts native came up huge at the start of the third period, as she made a spectacular save on Harvard's Shannon Hollands to keep the game tied at one.
Donohue ripped a shot past Pellicci in the first half of the third period to put Dartmouth back on top, 2-1. The junior has seven goals on the year, which leads the Big Green.
Moments later, Paige Lester tied the contest after a pass attempt ricocheted off a Big Green defender and into the back of the net. Dartmouth and Harvard continued to apply pressure throughout the third period.
Overtime was needed as the game remained knotted up at 2-2 after 60 minutes of play. At the end of regulation, Harvard outshot Dartmouth 26-19.
A wild three-on-three overtime frame ensued, as both squads exchanged chances, but could not best the netminders. Emerson made five saves in just 2:39 before a shot from Kristin Della Rovere found the back of the net, ending the contest.
Dartmouth fell to 5-14-0 with an 1-11-0 ECAC Hockey conference record, while Harvard improved to 5-10-3 and 4-7-3 in conference tilts. The Big Green have dropped the last 13 matchups against Harvard dating back to 2015.
The Big Green are back in action next weekend for a pair of ECAC Hockey contests at home. Dartmouth first takes on Union Friday January 20 at 6 p.m. before taking on RPI Saturday at 3 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
