Dartmouth outshot the Dutchwomen 38-24, dominating much of the contest. The Big Green were especially effective in the faceoff circle, winning 62.8 percent of draws.
"I saw a full team effort, a lot of energy, a lot of discipline and a lot of heart," head coach
Liz Keady Norton said following the win. "For us, it's exciting. It's our first home win against a well-coached Union team. We came together as a group, we outworked them and we did the little things well. Sometimes it's those little things that add up, and it's great to get a home win."
The Dutchwomen opened the scoring 8:42 into the opening period. Maren Friday scored her fifth goal of the season on a rebound opportunity following a shot from the point. Union maintained the lead for the majority of the first.
Union was assessed a five-minute major penalty for head contact with 3:45 remaining in the first. The Big Green created consistent pressure in front of Matsoukas' goal as the period entered its dying moments.
The Big Green were able to break through with 49 seconds remaining in the period. Dartmouth executed a beautiful play with numerous passes, before Donohue gave Hill a chance at the net. The sophomore forced the puck high and into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
It took just 39 seconds for Dartmouth to take its first lead of the game. Primomo made a tenacious play behind the Union's net, which ricocheted off Matsoukas and into the net.
"It was a good team effort to get the puck into the zone during the second half of the power play." Primomo said. "We were all working hard. I followed the puck behind the net and put it back on net, which is important, but it was a team effort."
The Big Green took a 2-1 lead into the second period. Dartmouth outshot the Dutchwomen 18-7 in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Bowlby kept the momentum going for Dartmouth as the second period began. A shot from Fuoco set up the senior for her fifth of the season, and the Big Green's third power play goal of the night.
"I think we really focused on tape-to-tape passing, like our coaches have said," Hill said of Dartmouth's power play success. "Once we made those passes, we had great opportunities to score."
Dartmouth continued to apply pressure, outshooting Union in the second frame 14-6. The Big Green were strong on faceoffs, winning 10 of 16 draws.
The third period showed off Dartmouth's ability to overcome adversity, as the Big Green were forced to kill off three minor penalties to maintain their lead. The penalty killing unit was effective, allowing just three shots in six minutes of power play time for the Dutchwomen.
Emerson was stellar in the final moments of the contest, as she turned 11 shots away in the third period. Dartmouth held on to the lead to secure its first home win since January 2, 2022.
Dartmouth improved to 6-14-0 with an 2-11-0 ECAC Hockey conference record, while Union fell to 10-14-3 and 3-10-1 in conference games.
The Big Green take the ice at Thompson Arena tomorrow afternoon against the RPI Engineers. Puck drop is slated for 3 p.m. and a stream will be available on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
