HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team earned a point against national No. 17 Harvard in the season opener after playing to a 1-1 tie on Friday evening at Thompson Arena. The two teams then played an unprecedented 18-round shootout, with the Crimson claiming the extra point.
Both teams are now 0-0-1 overall and 0-0-1 in ECAC Hockey to begin the season.
"Proud of the third period," said Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Hockey
Reid Cashman. "Being down one going into the third, showing that growth to come back and tie the game and really make a push. I think our group is disappointed not to get the extra point, but I think that's a good sign, showing that they are hungry for more."
After the Big Green and the Crimson played a scoreless five-minute overtime, the two teams then went to a shootout, with the winner earning an extra point in the standings. Goaltenders
Cooper Black and Derek Mullahy both made numerous stops to keep the shootout scoreless through the first 17 rounds. Jack Bar scored the winning shot in the 18
th round. Dartmouth hit the pipe twice in the shootout;
Ian Pierce in round 10 and
Owen Desilets in round 17.
Braiden Dorfman tied the game up midway through the third period after getting his stick on a loose puck near the crease.
Luke Haymes skated his way towards goal with the puck before being swarmed by numerous Harvard defensemen. He got a shot on goal and the rebound was there for Dorfman to tap it home.
Harvard opened the scoring midway through the second period when Casey Severo was able to get a close-range shot past Black for his first goal of the season.
Black finished with 25 saves while the Big Green blocked 20 shots.
Matt Fusco led the way with four blocks while
Eric Charpentier and
John Fusco both had three.
"Obviously, it was important to get the point," Black said after the game. "Being down 1-0, I thought the boys did a good job battling back and getting a point."
Dartmouth is back in action tomorrow evening with its first road contest of the year, traveling to Durham to take on Granite State rival UNH. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex and the game will be available to stream nationally on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet.
