NEW ORLEANS, La. — A pair of Dartmouth sailors took part in the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) 2023 Fall National Championships this weekend, with
Sarah Young placing fifth in the women's regatta, with Ben Sheppard finishing 15th in open.
Sheppard tallied five top 10 finishes out of the 14 races. Two came in the first three races of the weekend (seventh and sixth), with his top finish coming in race No. 13, when he came in fifth.
"In the highly-competitive open fleet, Ben sailed a great regatta," said Dartmouth head coach
Justin Assad. "It was a learning experience and just getting to the national championship is a major accomplishment. We are excited to see him continue to grow and improve."
Competing in the Singlehanded National Championships for a third straight season,
Sarah Young jumped out to a fast start and was leading for a stretch. Out of the 14 races, she finished first in race No. 5, top five in eight of them and top 10 in all but four races.
"Sarah led for a portion of the middle of the regatta, but two tough races on Sunday put the podium just out of reach," said Assad. "She fought hard and sailed a great event. We are proud of Ben and Sarah, and thankful for their performance — they helped us put points on the board for the Fowle Trophy at the end of the year."
This weekend's racing wrapped up a successful fall of sailing for the Big Green, who will return to action this spring.
