TEMPE, Ariz. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team and No. 12 Arizona State traded leads throughout the game, ultimately tying 4-4 in the first-ever meeting between the two teams on Friday evening at Mullett Arena. After going down 1-0 early, the Big Green responded with three-straight goals to take a 3-1 lead. The Sun Devils tied things up before Dartmouth once again regained the lead. Arizona State later tied it before winning the shootout, 1-0.
Dartmouth moves to 2-3-5 overall while Arizona State is now 11-3-3.
"There's lots of things to love about our group and I told them that after the game," said
Reid Cashman, the Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Hockey. "There's lots of habits that we are building, there's execution that our staff is really excited about. There are so many great things to build off of. On the flip side, special teams has to improve, be executed better and we need to find ways to win."
Steven Townley had given the Big Green a 4-3 lead early in the third period with his first goal of the season.
Matt Fusco, recording his first collegiate point with the assist, made the pass forward to Townley. Townley had the space in front of him and took advantage, skating towards the net and firing a shot that tucked into the top corner of the net.
Benji Eckerle scored midway through the third with an unassisted goal to tie the game. The Sun Devils had scored twice late in the second to tie it at 3-3 after the Big Green had gone ahead 3-1.
After going down 1-0 at the 6:17 mark of the first period, Dartmouth scored its first goal of the night 96 seconds later when
Joey Musa tallied his third goal of the year to tie the game.
Ryan Sorkin gained possession of the puck just outside the crease of the Arizona State net and passed the puck off to the right to Musa, who had the opening to smash it into the net.
Nikita Nikora scored his second goal of the season midway through the period to give the Big Green a 2-1 lead.
Cooper Flinton made a long pass across the ice through the neutral zone, splitting the defense to Nikora and sending him through on goal. Nikora calmly finished the puck around Sun Devils goaltender TJ Semptimphelter.
Haymes capped the first period scoring with just over five minutes remaining. The combination of Haymes, Musa and Nikora opened up the space for Haymes to finish from just outside the crease for his third goal of the year.
The shots were close throughout the game, with Arizona State holding a slight edge, 25-24.
