HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's tennis team dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to defending Ivy League champion Princeton in the opening match of the ECAC Championship on Friday morning at Alexis Boss Tennis Center.
After the Big Green earned the doubles point, the match came down to a marathon three-setter at No. 4 singles between
Ujvala Jupalli and Princeton's Maia Sung. The Tigers moved into the winner's bracket after Sung claimed the third set in a tiebreaker.
Chidimma Okpara and
Ashley Hess clinched the doubles point for Dartmouth on Court 1 after
Brooke Hess and
Katie Weber rolled to a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 position.
Lexi Dewire and
Emily Zhou held a 5-4 lead before doubles action stopped.
Princeton evened the score with All-American Daria Frayman's win over Okpara at No. 1 singles and Leena Bennetto followed suit on Court 3 to give the Tigers the advantage. Back-to-back wins by
Emily Zhou (No. 5) and
Ashley Hess (No. 2) had the Big Green on top once again with two matches yet to finish. Princeton needed to win both and did just that with a pair of three-set victories, including Sung's match-sealing triumph on Court 4.
Dartmouth will take on Cornell at 8 a.m. on Saturday to open Day 2 of the ECAC Championship.
