Correction: The award was originally given to Big Green skier Nina Seeman on Feb. 13, but the EISA issued a correction on Feb. 15 to give the honor to Thurston.
HANOVER, N.H. — The Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association announced their weekly award winners following the Harvard Carnival, and Dartmouth's
Ava Thurston was chosen as the organization's Women's Nordic Skier of the Week.
Thurston, a freshman from Waterbury, Vermont, reached the podium in both classic races over the weekend, winning the 10K on Friday before helping the 3x5K relay team finish third on Saturday. Her performances played a large role in the Big Green winning their first carnival in nearly four years, edging out Vermont by 13 points, 848-835.
Thurston missed the previous two carnivals due to her commitment to skiing at the FIS Junior World Skiing Championships but quickly made up for the lost time by earning her first collegiate victory in the 10K classic by more than 35 seconds on Friday. She then skied the anchor leg for the Big Green's 3x5K classic relay team, closing with the fastest time over the final 5K to make sure the Dartmouth trio stepped on the podium.
Dartmouth will be back in action this weekend for the Williams Carnival at Prospect Mountain and Jiminy Peak. The races on Friday, Feb. 17 will include the slalom and a 10K classic for both the men and women, while Saturday's events will feature the giant slalom and freestyle races — 10K for the men, 5K for the women.
Note: Thurston is the second Big Green skier to earn a weekly award from the EISA this year, joining women's alpine skier
Allie Resnick.
